“When I’m with him, it feels like he likes me. But when I’m not with him, I convince myself that it’s nothing. He hasn’t come out and said anything about being with me.”

“Only one way to find out. You have to talk to him.”

Talk. That isn’t Grant’s favorite pastime.

“Damn. Ms. Canterbury is going to be heartbroken. She has a thing for him.”

My chin jerks back. “The old lady with seven cats who lives down the block?”

Val nods, biting the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing. “I think she’s a closet freak.”

“I did not need to know that.” But I laugh imagining what Grant’s reaction will be when I tell him. “I can’t wait to tell him that. It’s so fun to fuck with him.”

“And even more fun when you literally do fuck him.”

Several people sitting in the row in front of us turn around and give us disgusted looks.

I cover my face with my hands. “We’re done with this conversation.”

“Oh, look. The PTO mom is looking over here to see if I was lying about saving the seat for you. Wave to the nice psycho lady.”

I giggle as I wave to the red-haired lady who’s glaring at us.

The curtain rises, and a hush falls over the room as the show begins.

And for the next thirty minutes, I tell myself that I’m just a woman who’s here to see her friend’s kid perform instead of a woman who will never get to sit in a school to watch herownkid perform.

When I pullup to my house, Grant’s truck catches my eye in his driveway.

That’s odd. He’s home early.I shoot him a text to make sure everything is okay.

Me:Are you playing hooky or are you sick?

Grant: My back went out.

Me: Oh no. Are you okay? Do you need anything?

Grant: Wait, why are you home?

Me: I took the day off to see my friend’s son in his school play.

Grant: I could actually use some help. I don’t want Noah to come home and see me on the floor.

Me: You’re on the floor?!

Grant: Do NOT make a Life Alert joke right now.

Grant: There’s a spare key under the mat by the front door.

I jogacross the street and let myself into Grant’s house.

“I’m here.” My eyes dart around the living room and kitchen. “Where are you?”

His voice comes from upstairs. “My bedroom.”

I take the stairs by twos. If his house is like mine, then his bedroom should be to the left. I stick my head through the doorway and spot Grant lying on his stomach on the floor at the foot of his bed with Romeo lying next to him.

I rush over to him and kneel down. “What happened?”
