“I dropped off Noah at school and then I came home to get ready for work.” He lets out a long breath and rolls his eyes. “I bent down to tie my boots and I must’ve twisted the wrong way. This happens to me from time to time.”

“Have you seen a doctor?”

“No.”

“Grant.”

“Can you at least help me up before you yell at me?”

“Who said anything about helping you up?” I scratch Romeo’s head and he licks my arm. “You did a good job staying here with Daddy.”

“Sure, you’re nice to him,” Grant mutters.

“If you make an appointment with an orthopedist, I’ll rub your belly. How does that sound?”

He grunts. “I just might like that.”

I push off the floor and stand. “All right. Let’s get you to the bed.”

“I need to take my time. Just hold my arm, and don’t let me fall.”

“Sounds easy enough.” I bend forward and hold out my arms, hooking one under his shoulder. “Come on, you big ogre. Nice and easy.”

Grant slowly rolls onto his side and winces as he moves to a seated position. I let him take his time, my heart aching at the sight of how much pain he’s in.

“On three.”

I nod and plant my feet shoulder-width apart. “One…two…”

“Three.” Grant braces himself with his left hand on the edge of his bed and hoists himself up while I support him on the right as he stands.

But he’s not steady on his feet. His legs wobble as he hisses in pain and teeters to one side.

“Grant…”

He leans his weight on me. “Fuck.”

I struggle to hold him as he fights for balance, my knees buckling. If I don’t think of something fast, we’ll both be on the floor. I muster all my strength and shove him toward the bed instead. He falls back onto the mattress and pulls me down with him. I land on top of him, chest to chest.

“Shit.” I brace my hands on either side of him, propping myself up to avoid hurting him even more. “I lost my balance, and I figured the bed would be a better landing place than the floor.”

“You’re right.” He blinks up at me, his dark eyes searching my face. “This is better.”

My skin heats. “I mean, I’m not opposed to the view I had when I walked in either.”

His eyebrow tics. “Were you checking out my ass?”

“Kind of hard not to.”

He skims his hands down my spine and settles on my lower back. “I know what you mean.”

If he weren’t hurt, I’d mount him right here and beg him to rip off my clothes. The memory of our phone sex replays through my mind.

But he’s in pain, and I need to keep my mind out of the gutter, so I carefully start to climb off him.

Grant grips my waist. “Don’t.”

I freeze, hovering over him.
