Jason scoffs. “Hey, I was a perfect gentleman to her. This has nothing to do with me.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose. “I don’t know what to do. It’s been over a week, and she won’t talk to me.”

Mitch takes a swig of his beer. “Have you gone over there?”

I shake my head. “I’ve called and texted. But if she doesn’t want to talk to me, I won’t force her by showing up at her house.”

That’d make me no better than her ex-husband, wouldn’t it?

“Has she seen Noah?” Mitch asks.

“Yeah, she’s still tutoring her. But they’re doing it at her house instead of here.”

“Give her time.” Jason shrugs. “She’ll come around.”

“Once again, you’re demonstrating why your generation sucks.” Mitch shakes his head at him. “You need to prove to her that you’re sorry. You can’t just lie down and accept the fact that she doesn’t want to talk to you.”

Jason shoots him a dubious look. “Well, he can’t make her talk if she doesn’t want to.”

“Women love romantic gestures. They eat that shit up. It’s go big or go home when it comes to love.”

While the two continue bickering, Trent glances at me from across the table. “You love her, don’t you?”

Love.

I’ve had girlfriends when I was younger. I’ve had the words said to me, but I’ve never said the words to anyone. Not until Noah came into my life. She taught me what love truly means. It’s unconditional. It’s unwavering. It’s unapologetic. You do what you have to do for the person you love, even if it hurts, because her needs come before your own. And when you love someone, that’s all that matters—her and her needs.

“You pushed her away because you thought you were doing the right thing for her.” Trent hikes a shoulder. “Isn’t that what you do when you love someone?”

I swallow past the emotion in my throat. “She doesn’t see it that way.”

“Becauseshelovesyou. And she thinks you don’t feel the same because you let her go.”

I run my fingers through my hair, picturing her tear-stained cheeks as she left me standing on her porch. “I didn’t want to let her go.”

“So then tell her what you want.”

“And what if it’s too late?”

“You won’t know if you don’t try.”

“He’s right, Dad.”

I turn around at the sound of Noah’s voice, and the room falls silent.

She stands in the doorway, wringing her hands as she chews on her bottom lip. “I know you and Lenny are in a fight, but you can make up with her. You just have to tell her how you feel.”

“And how do you know we’re in a fight?”

She pulls out the chair beside me and turns it to face me as she sits. “I’m not an idiot, Dad.”

“Did she say something to you?”

“She told me to ask you, which we both know is pointless because you never talk about anything with me.”

“That’s not true.”

“It’s not? Then tell me what’s going on.”
