Simone was right.

“I understand why you did what you did, Grant. I just wish you would’ve talked to me about it instead of shutting me out.”

His Adam’s apple bounces as he swallows. “Noah told me about your surgery, and I’m so sorry you’re in this situation. It kills me to know that you can’t have children because I know you’d have made the most incredible mother.”

Tears well behind my lids as my throat tightens, and all I can do is nod.

“It might not mean much, and I know it’s not the same, but for what it’s worth…you’re the closest thing to a mom Noah has ever had.”

I suppress the sob that climbs up my throat. “I love her, Grant.”

“I know you do. Watching her with you has been one of the greatest joys of my life.” His eyes glisten like obsidian stones. “She loves you. And if I’m being honest, I’ve gone and fallen in love with you too.”

Emotion surges in my chest as a tear rolls down my cheek.

He loves me.

Grant reaches out and clutches my face between his hands. “This time without you has made me realize something. Maybe you’re my lesson. Maybe I’m missing out on the greatest thing in my life next to Noah because I’ve been too afraid to let you in. Maybe everything we’ve been through in our past has led us up to this very moment because you’re supposed to be in my life to show me how to open up this damn ogre heart of mine and show me that the happiness you deserve? I deserve it too. So, this is me saying that you were right, and I was wrong. I shouldn’t have pushed you away. I should’ve talked to you about the way I was feeling. And I should’ve told you I love you the moment I felt it.”

I grip his wrists as he cradles my face. “Say it again.”

“That I love you?”

“That I’m right, and you’re wrong.”

He chuckles and rests his forehead against mine. “I was wrong, and you were right.”

I run my fingers through his hair and grip it at the roots. “But your heart was in the right place, and I love you for it.”

“You love me?”

“I do.”

Grant cradles my face in his massive hands and kisses my lips. “I love you, Elena. You’ve brought the light back into my life, and I want to spend the rest of it giving you everything you deserve.”

God, that sounds so good.

“Well, your five minutes are up, so you’d better get going before Jason gets here and—”

Grant slams his lips against mine.

The force of his kiss takes my breath away. He claims my mouth like he owns it, taking what he wants, tilting my chin and parting my lips with his tongue as he dives inside to search for mine. Every nerve ending in my body comes alive, sparking with heat and desire.

Our hands are frantic, unable to stay in one spot for too long like we can’t get close enough. With a growl, he picks me up and plops me on top of the counter, gripping two handfuls of my ass as he pulls me against him. I wrap my legs around his waist and cling to him, winding my tongue around his and moaning into his mouth.

“I’m sorry, Elena.” He gasps for air, speaking against my lips before his tongue sweeps back inside my mouth. “I’m so fucking sorry that I hurt you.”

“This is all I’ve wanted, Grant. Just you.”

“You have me. I’m yours.”

My hands slip under his shirt, my fingertips roaming over the hard ridges of his muscles. “How long can you stay?”

“Noah is waiting for me to come back.” He sucks my bottom lip into his mouth and releases it with a pop. “She was very concerned about our fight.”

“What are we going to tell her now?”

He presses his lips to my neck. “That we’ve made up.” His tongue skates along my skin. “That you forgave me.” He nips at my collarbone. “That we’re dating.”
