“Did you ever miss a game as I was growing up?”

He shakes his head ruefully. “The only ones I missed were the live games when you made the big time and I couldn’t be there. I couldn’t keep up with you.”

I smile. “But hey, the big screen still counts.”

“Exactly. You’ve done well for yourself, Son. I’m proud of you.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

“We gonna keep on getting soppy all night?” he jokes, as our meals are delivered.

“Not if I can help it.” I chuckle, tucking in.

“I’m glad you called me,” Dad says, picking up his knife and fork. “Couldn’t come soon enough.”

“Better late than never, they say, right?”

Dad smiles and contemplates this. “Something like that.”

“I’m glad, Dad. And I’m sorry, for what it’s worth.”

He looks a little choked up at my words. “I’m sorry too,” he says.

We both look at each other. “Do we have to hug now?” I joke.

“We can if you really want.”

“Maybe later.”

We both laugh. He asks about Emmerson as we eat, I did mention she’s in town and that I’ve been seeing her. He doesn’t pry too much; he seems to just want me to be happy.

We’re well on the way to establishing something resembling a father and son relationship, and I realize after all these years of thinking I was fine, it’s something that I’ve been missing.

Things went well with my dad, and I couldn’t be happier about that.

I need to work on my mom…. And I need to see Em again.

I’m out for the count by the time I get home, but part of me is still buzzing from everything that’s happened today. I have a restless night tossing and turning.

I text her later the next day to see if she can come over after she leaves the hospital.

I’ll go get her, send a car, I don’t care.

I have no idea if she knows anything about where I live. It’s certainly beyond opulent, and the view over the Seattle skyline is second to none.

I catch a glimpse of it here and there when I’m not training.

When I can take the time to actually sit up on my roof sundeck and appreciate it, it’s one of the best feelings in the world.

A part of me wants to show Emmerson where I live and what I’ve been doing all this time. Not to show off, but just to see what she thinks.

She sends a text back that she’ll come over this afternoon and says she’ll catch a cab over so she doesn’t have to try to find the place and park.

I tell her I’ll send a private car to pick her up from the hospital.

I can’t help but chuckle when she says Maddison went out on the town again with Ashton. I guess they must be making the most of it while she only has a day or two left in town. Not bad for two people who just met.
