We both laugh, and she flops back down.

“Spend the night with me,” I whisper. “It’s late…”

She rests her cheek on my chest. “But Maddie?”

“Text her… she’ll be fine, you’ll be back in the morning.”

She thinks about it for a moment, then I feel her roll off me onto her side. “I guess I could…” She reaches for her cell on my nightstand and unlocks it, laughing a moment later.

“What is it?” I ask, laying back with one hand behind my head.

“She sent me a message half an hour ago saying she was still out and she might be up late.”

“I’ll fucking kill Ashton.”

“I’ll quickly text her that I’ll stay the night,” she says. “I’m sure she will have all the questions under the sun for me in the morning.”

“Is your Mom still insisting on staying at the hospital?”

“Yeah, I think my Dad keeps sweet-talking the nurses. She came home today, though, and had a rest and some sleep before she went back again.”

I laugh quietly. “I can see that about your Dad.”

When she’s sent her message, she folds back into my arms a moment later, and I kiss her hair. “You know what he’s like.”

“I’m so glad he’s okay.”

“Well, some adjustments need to be made.” She sighs. “He can’t keep going on the way he has been.”

“Totally agree. Your Mom will have him on a strict regime now I’m sure.”

“It was so scary, Taylor. Thinking something could happen to him. I don’t want you to fall out with your Mom over the past. If I can get past it, then you should too.”

“I know.” I sigh, stroking my fingers up and down her spine. “I just never expected it from her. It came at such a shock when she admitted it.”

“We all make mistakes,” she says softly.

I squeeze her tightly. “You’re awfully forgiving, considering the circumstances.”

“I don’t want to hold a grudge forever. That won’t get us anywhere.”

I kiss her hair again. “It feels good with you, Em. I never thought I’d be admitting that. But this, this is something else.”

She props herself up on her elbow to look at me in the dark. “Is it strange that it doesn’t feel weird?”

“Kinda.” I chuckle. “But maybe you’re right. Maybe we’re better people now, and we won’t make those same mistakes again.”

“I never stopped loving you, Taylor. Never,” she tells me.

It breaks my heart, but brings warmth to it immediately after. Because I know she still loves me, even now.

“You remember what I told you all those years ago?”

She rests her chin on my chest and nods.

“Tell me.”

“That you’d love only me, forever.”
