I suddenly wish I’d picked her up so I could drop her off again. I don’t like the thought of her driving off like this, after everything we discussed tonight.

“Everything okay?” she asks me when I reach her.

“Everything’s fine.” I nod. “Just a couple of guys from the press. They’re pretty easily pleased.”

“I guess it’s not what you know.”

“Exactly. It comes with the territory.” I shrug. I don’t wanna tell her how many times I’ve been photographed leaving restaurants and events with different women. Some of those moments weren’t exactly my finest.

I look down at her as she reaches her moms car.

It’s a strange feeling that hits me in the chest as I breathe in the night air and take in all that she is. As she looks up at me with those emerald eyes I could get lost in and never surface from if I let myself, I realize something.

I don’t want her to fucking go.

CHAPTER15

Emmerson

Tonight has taken more of a turn than I could ever have planned for or anticipated. I need to reassess everything in my own time, because there’s too much to register right now. And he just paid off the press to not take pictures of us.

I guess that was kind of sweet.

He stands here in front of me, watching me intently. He’s been doing that all night.

It’s obvious we were both nervous about seeing each other. And now everything seems to be out in the open, more than what I ever expected.

I had no idea he hadn’t sided with his mom that night. I just took half of the sentence and ran with it… I shake my head at the memory.

“Em, what’s wrong?” he asks me, reaching over to brush some hair out of my face. His fingers lightly touch me.

“Just thinking about the past.” I sigh. “I’m sorry tonight was so heavy.”

He touches me on the chin then, tilting my face up gently to look at him. “Hey, it’s okay. Everything is gonna be okay.”

“You seemed pretty mad, and I don’t blame you.”

“I just need time to think about all of this. I was kind of in shock about most of it.”

I sigh into the night and nod. “I understand.” I just wish he really knew how hard it was for me too. But I hold my tongue. I don’t think I’d be able to cope with any more confessions tonight. If I hadn’t blurted that thing out about his mom, none of this would have happened. But then again… none of it would be out in the open.

It’s something that Susie or Maddison would say is a good thing that it’s out there now, with no secrets or anything else between us.

What is between us now is just a little bit of the crisp Seattle air.

“Thank you for dinner,” I say, looking up at him. He insisted on paying.

He stares down at me. Those blue eyes get me every time.

This chiseled jawline. Everything about him is so manly and sexy.

Absolutely nothing has changed about him… just the fact he got more beautiful.

I know he probably wanted to get up and leave tonight, as he looked visibly upset, but I’m glad he didn’t.

“Sure thing,” he says with a smile. Again, it’s a sad smile. Nothing like that bravado often seen on the TV screen when he’s thrashing through the goals.

“You’ve got a game tomorrow. You should get your beauty sleep.”
