The only thing I want more is her.

We’re on the morning flight out of New York, no sightseeing for us on this trip.

We have the finals to prepare for. It’s going to be a crazy couple of weeks, but everyone is pumped.

I don’t even know how my body is going to hold up. I feel pretty beaten from last night. I took a soak in the hot tub when I got back to the hotel. Ulrich took the worst of it, I know he’s hurting as he gets on the plane, but tries not to show it.

I had a few drinks with the guys during dinner, then went to bed.

My ribs weren’t broken, thank fucking God. Though I have a massive bruise on my left side to show for it. Almost like Ace Brixton’s stamp of disapproval right there on my body. I do feel for the losing teams, to get that close and bow out just before the finals. It must suck for them.

Coach wants us to rest over the weekend as we get back to training on Monday and find out who we’ll meet in the finals. It’s between the Dallas Lions and Vegas Heat. Vegas looks to be the favorite.

I keep my head out of what's going on with the other two teams on the flight back. I just want to get home, call my mom, and see Emmerson.

“You know, if you wanna catch up with Maddison, you better do it this weekend, bro. She’s leaving in a few days,” I tell Ash.

Ashton would agree to absolutely anything right now. Though, I don’t think it is going to take much convincing. He seems pretty about her ga-ga already.

“Tell me the place and the time.” He shrugs.

“I’ll call you,” I say to him as I head to the parking lot after we get back to the stadium. “I gotta do a few things.”

He grins, all too knowingly.

I dial Emmerson as soon as I get in the car.

She answers after a couple of rings.

“Hey,” she gushes. At least, in my head it sounds like she’s gushing.

“Hey.” I smile. I’m still pinching myself about the finals, with every sensory nerve I have in my body feeling alive.

“Congratulations on the win. It was amazing.”

“So, you watched it?”

She laughs. “Yeah, Dad insisted when we were at the hospital last night.”

“Oh man, no pressure then, huh?”

She laughs again.

“How is he?”

“He’s doing much better today,” she says. “I spent most of the morning there with Mads.”

“That’s great news, Em. It really is.”

“Yes, he looked much brighter after a good night’s sleep.”

“You know how long he’s going to be in for?”

“They’re keeping him for a few days for observations.”

I’m so freaking happy for her right now, it’s palpable.
