“Hey, do you girls still wanna catch up for drinks or something? Ashton is pretty keen to meet Maddison before she goes back to Florida.”

She laughs quietly down the phone. “I think that's a great idea. Are you back in town yet?”

“Just flew in, heading home to drop off my stuff. Do you wanna meet this afternoon? When are you going to the hospital again?”

“I’ll go later this evening. Visiting hours are open to around eight p.m.”

“We could do afternoon tapas or something? Before you go to the hospital.”

“Sounds perfect. I’m sure Maddie will be all for it.”

“Great, just text me if she doesn’t want to. We can still meet up.”

“Sounds great… hey, Taylor?”

I bite my lip, trying to not seem too fucking eager. “Yeah,Red?”

“You did really great last night. You were exceptional.”

You’re exceptional, Em. You just don’t seem to know it yet.

I feel ten feet tall knowing she was watching me. “Thanks, Em. That means a lot.”

“I’ll see you later.”

“See ya.”

We hang up and I spur of the moment decide I’m going to call my dad.

I don’t know if it’s just because I’m on a high, but even if it is, too long has slipped by without us doing anything together.

I decide to bite the bullet because life seems to be pulling me in that direction.

I never thought I’d be doing something as arbitrary as meeting up with Emmerson for tapas and drinks after everything we’ve been through. But here we are.

There’s something magnetic about the whole thing.

I fucking hope this good feeling lasts. At the moment, it feels like I can’t lose, and I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. I don’t want things to come crashing down again, but I want to milk the good feeling for as long as I can.

My dad picks up after a couple of rings, as I’m still navigating my way back to my penthouse.

“Son,” he answers, like he always does.

The number of times he’s said the same thing, but I never really noticed. Somehow, it sounds different now.

“Dad,” I say. “We really need to talk.”

CHAPTER18

Emmerson

Maddie and I end up meeting Taylor and Ashton downtown a couple of hours later at La Luna, a Mexican place that serves great tapas, beer on tap, and cocktails galore. We all opt for a tasting plate and a beer.

Since I have to drive us home, I resist ordering a margarita. Maddie was pretty excited when I told her Ashton wanted to meet her, she jumped at the chance. Now that my dad is out of the woods with his heart scare, I can breathe a little bit easier.

“So you’re the girl in the number thirteen jersey?” Ashton muses when he sees Maddie for the first time and shakes her hand.

He’s such a sweetheart, so I don’t have any qualms about him.
