MIA

When Elias left, it was clear he would not be returning until he fed his hungry soul what he deemed retribution.

I wasn’t against it. Somewhere deep inside of me, I wanted Alexsei to pay for everything he did to me leading up to this moment.

He like his father deserved to die a slow, painful death. However, I knew that Elias had to speak to the families before any act was taken, at least that’s what I overheard when Elias was shouting.

I dressed as I decided to head downstairs for breakfast before I resigned to the garden to do a bit of knitting- something I was also intent on trying.

At my door, stood my newest bodyguard, Killian. He was a tad bit bulkier than Jason- it was as if my husband believed that would stop a bullet from penetrating his body- and like Jason he also opted not to speak unless completely necessary.

So, there he stood in the kitchen as I stuffed my face with a pie that Louise was kind enough to bake before she retired.

Elias believed it was time, but it didn’t hurt less when she bid us all goodbye. I grew accustomed to her, just like I did Jason, so it felt like I was being forced to adapt to another foreign place.

Although, her granddaughter made the transition easier. Elias didn’t want just anyone in his home or cooking our meals so he was finding it hard to employ somebody new until Louise ask that her granddaughter be considered for the position.

Her granddaughter, Mackenzie, was 26 - a few years older than me - but we got along. In the short time that she had been here, I learned that she was a single mother and she wanted to become a writer. She was hoping that this job would help her save money to go off to university.

The ringtone of my phone pulled me from my thoughts as I swallowed the last slice of the pie.

It was Michael.

“Hey,” I answered.

“You seem happy. Completely different from when I last saw you.”

“Wow… you’re very observant, Michael.”

He laughed, “And you're back to your sarcastic ways.”

I laughed. This is what I missed. My brother and I laughing together before this whole “Family” became his life.

“…seriously Mia, are you happy?”

Was I?No one asked me that before today but as I sat there I was reminded of the last few weeks.

Elias was not Ilya and that was cause for celebration enough. He treated me with respect and care. He acted like a gentleman and my protector when he needed to. He was the first man that fulfilled his promise to me and that made me happy.

So yes, for the first time in three years, I was happy. And it was all because of my husband.

“Yes,” I finally said causing Michael to huff. I could hear the relief in his voice.

“That’s good… That’s all I’ve wanted for you, Mia. I hope you know that.”

“I know…and Michael?”

“Yeah.”

“I forgive you.”

I heard him sigh.

After everything that happened, I realized that my brother only did what he thought was best. Granted that I swore I hated him with every fiber of my body, I knew without him I would have never been here.

Alive and happy.

And I never would have met Elias.
