I imagined what his last moments were like: probably scampering to this same armory, fighting who would restrain him, the helplessness that was a mere glint as he accepted his faith, and the regret that he failed father.

My hand traced his face; his clear, dark skin. I didn’t care that his blood would smear on my hands. It was the last I had of him.

I traced the knife that stuck out of his eye socket and then to his other eye which was identical to mine.

I put my head to his own, the coldness of his corpse against my warm flesh.

“Brother,” I whispered, “This isn’t the end.”

I held my head up and laid a kiss on Michael’s head.

“You asked me what I wanted…,” I started, still staring and rubbing my brother’s face even though I was speaking to Elias.

“Yes,” I heard my husband respond.

“I want Alexsei Banrov dead. I want to spit on his grave and know that I sent him to join his bastard father. I want... him to pay for what he did to my brother,” I said. My spiteful and sharp tone was unfamiliar to my ears as I closed my brother’s eye.

I turned my head to my husband who was still leaning against the door, one hand in the pocket of his slacks and the other drumming against the door.

“Will you do that for me?”

He pushed from the door and walked towards me, his hands on my waist as he turned me fully to him.

Using his right hand, he lifted my chin.

“I would do anything for you, my sweet Mia.”

Chapter Twenty-Eight

ELIAS

Weeks had passed since anyone had seen Alexsei. His allies had claimed not to know where he was. And his family- they would never reveal his location.

Liam presume he was waiting until things blew over before he would re-emerge.

But if he was counting on me cooling down, he had no idea how thirsty I was to see him die.

My wife refused to bury her brother until his murderer was rid of this earth and for that reason alone I could not let Alexsei’s actions go unchecked.

I heard a knock at my door as I sipped on a shot of hot scotch.

“Come.”

Eli and Silas came walking in, a pep in their step. I hope they had news for me; Mia was getting restless.

“We found him,” Eli said, showing me a tablet that had a live feed of Alexsei.

“Where is this?”

“1214thStreet in Eleanor. The fucker was under our noses the entire time,” he answered.

“How did you find out?” I asked, downing the rest of my drink and hoisting my jacket from the back of my chair.

“His girl is a friend of one of the dancers at the club. I overheard her telling the girl that they were leaving the country for a vacation. No doubt he didn’t tell the poor girl he was on the run,” he said, “I had Troy follow her home and there he was.”

I held Eli’s face, lightly patting his cheek, “Good work.”
