After a while I nod and tap my fingers on my desk and say slowly, “There is no position for you at Gold Hawk Enterprises. We employ the best there is and have no time to train a woman with no experience.”

I watch for her reaction, but I get nothing back except the silence that tells me she is waiting for me to speak first. This is refreshing because most women would be flirting like crazy with me now and doing everything in their power to ensure their position in my company, or in my bed. Not Purity Sanders. She is giving nothing away.

I know she has no options. She is wearing a tatty dress and probably only has the things on her to her name. She will have no place to go, no money and no friends. She is taking her shot and hoping to score a direct hit, and she has. She just doesn’t know that hit will backfire on her and cause her more harm than good. I am going to have so much fun educating her in life in the real world. Not some cult town in the middle of nowhere where life was frozen in time and the women treated like third-class citizens. She is so perfect I can’t believe my luck.

I pretend to contemplate further before saying, “Although…” She stares at me with no emotion as I say slowly, “I do have a position for an assistant, but it’s a live-in one.”

“I don’t understand.”

She appears confused and I lean back and say casually. “It requires no experience because full training is provided. You will be paid well, and your living accommodation and meals are included. I offer a clothing allowance and a personal grooming budget. The catch is, you are on call twenty-four seven.”

I watch for her reaction, but once again she says nothing and just appears to be considering her options. The silence that hangs in the air gives nothing away, and I watch with interest to see where her decision falls.

“An assistant?” She cocks her head to one side.

“What exactly does that involve?”

Saint smirks, enjoying the scene a little too much and I stare at him pointedly, causing his smirk to disappear fast, before smiling at the woman hovering on the edge of my web.

“It involves accompanying me to events and charming my guests when I entertain, organizing my diary and fetching what I need. You will be the person closest to me and will help organize my day. You see, Miss. Sanders…”

I lean forward and stare her directly in the eye and get a similar direct gaze thrown right back at me.

“I am a busy man. I have no time for anything other than business and yet normal life gets in the way of that. I need someone beside me who is professional at what she does. Doesn’t question, just follows instruction, and conducts herself with poise, elegance and grace and I think you will be perfect for the job.”

I take out my fountain pen and write a figure on the notepad and slide it across the desk to her.

“This is your salary, and it doesn’t include living expenses that will be provided by me.”

I watch with a hooded expression as I wait for her to jump headfirst into my trap because there is no possible way a woman in her position could turn down this sum of money. The way she blinks her eyes as she stares at the figure before her is the only clue that I have already won.

CHAPTER7

PURITY

Ihave never seen a figure like it. To be honest, I don’t even know what it equates to, but I guess it’s a lot. More than usual, which raises a few red flags. To be honest, this man is one giant red flag, and I don’t know what to do about it. He is offering me something that I’m almost positive hasn’t been advertised and I wonder about that. There is something very wrong with this and I need time to think about it.

I study the figure and wonder what is happening. When I came to see Miss. Sinclair, I thought it was to apply for a job. She left me waiting with no indication of what that would involve, and then this man’s assistant came and told me to follow him.

When I walked into his office, the man waiting scared the panties off me. He fills the room with a dark presence. The air is tense, acrid, and stifling, and it’s difficult to breathe. His personality is dark, but those tortured eyes mesmerize me. There is so much power in them, so many dark secrets that Ineverwant to unlock.

He tries to be polite, but I sense the anger inside him, the power, and the expectation. He is extremely bad for me; I already realize that, and I’ve spent a lifetime being warned of the Devil taking on many disguises. Is this my test? Is this man one I should avoid at all costs?

Then again, what choice do I have? Miss. Sinclair perhaps. Will she offer a better alternative?

My mind is racing, and I need time to breathe, so I stare directly into his dark gaze and say firmly, “Thank you for your offer, sir. I will need time to consider it.”

He doesn’t react. Perhaps the darkness intensifies a little in his eyes, but other than that, he remains impassive and merely nods.

“You have one hour, Miss. Sanders. Saint will direct you somewhere private to contemplate your decision.”

I nod and stand, offering him my hand as a show of respect.

“Thank you for the opportunity, sir. I will give it my consideration and let you know.”

I drop his hand and turn, the door already open and his assistant waiting to show me out and as soon as I leave the tense atmosphere, I take a deep breath, hopeful the oxygen will bring clarity to the situation.

As I follow the man, I say quickly, “If you please, will you take me back to Miss. Sinclair?”
