“It will. Thank you, James.”

As he heads off, I whisper, “Why don’t you get your own food?”

He shrugs. “Because I pay somebody else to do it.”

He nods toward the plate. “Eat. You need to rebuild your strength.”

I say nothing and just enjoy the feast before me, marveling at the hidden flavors that have made an innocent salad into a gastronomic pleasure. Occasionally, I steal small glances at the man beside me and wonder about him. He gives nothing away and appears quite brooding, almost as if his mind is working hard even though he rests. There must be a myriad of secrets behind those eyes, and I have always been fascinated by secrets. It’s why I’m here now, I suppose, because from an early age I knew I would never be happy living the same life as my mom.

Almost as if he can read minds, he says suddenly. “Tell me about yourself, Purity.”

“Is this my interview?” I say with a smile, and he shrugs. “If you like, or it could merely be polite conversation.”

“I doubt you do a lot of that, Mr. Vieri, or can I call you by your name?”

He raises his eyes and I shrug, “You call me by my first name, it’s only fair.”

“I don’t believe in fair, Purity.”

“What do you believe in–”

I raise my eyes and he grins. “Killian, Kill for short.”

“That’s an interesting name. I hope you don’t live up to it.”

For a second his eyes flash, causing the words to stick in my throat because right at this moment, I truly believe that name is well deserved. I don’t know why, but there is an underlying sense of evil surrounding this man and yet he has shown me nothing but kindness.

“Do you live up to your name, Purity?”

He says with an amused smile, and I shake my head.

“It’s rude to answer a question with a question.”

“Then my answer is yes.” He says, as if it means nothing, and I swear the blood drains from my face as he raises his eyes, “Your turn.”

“Yes.” I say, staring him directly in the eyes and I swear they deepen to dark pools of danger.

For a moment we say nothing, our admissions between us both quite shocking in their own way.

Kill.

That is the one word I can’t let go and then he breaks the silence by leaning forward and saying huskily, “Good answer.”

CHAPTER12

KILLIAN

The more time I spend with Purity, the more interested I get.

I’ve never met a woman like her in my entire life. She is so innocent. Unspoilt with a naivety that’s adorable. The women I am used to have none of those qualities. They are hard, refined, elegant and sexually aware. She is none of those things. Almost childlike, with a sharp edge that tells me she knows her own mind.

I like that a lot and as I stare into her eyes, I am intrigued by what lies behind them. I want to dive in and discover all her secrets. I want to educate her in what life offers and I want to awaken her sexuality. Reach in and draw it out, every delicious bit of it, and I want to mold her into my perfect woman because of all the women I’ve ever met, she is the first one who has even come close.

As I stare into her eyes, I decide. I will have her, own her and ruin her. I will marry her, control her, and keep her. She is my Eve who has tempted the devil this time because now my sight is set on her, she will never escape.

Now my decision is made, a sense of calm washes over me. It is done. I’ve found her. The woman who will share my life and bend to my will. The one my grandparents urged me to find. To clean up my act and she is the only one who can help me with that.

“Do I scare you, Purity?”
