He wants me.

Nobody has ever wanted me before. I see it in his eyes when he looks in my direction. There’s a deep yearning for companionship. I recognize it because I feel it too. Two lost souls searching for that someone who makes living worthwhile.

“I will love being married to you.” I say with a light kiss on his chest, and he stills, his fingers freezing in mid-stroke on my back.

I say lightly, “I’ve never been close to anyone before, unless you count my best friend, Faith. Oh, and Jed Turner who taught me how to fight.”

“To fight.” He sounds amused, and I giggle softly.

“Yes. We used to meet in Hunter’s meadow, and he would teach me. I’m not sure how it started. I think he punched me once and was surprised when I retaliated.”

“He punched you.” His voice lowers to an ominous growl. “What was his name again?”

I say dreamily. “We became friends, of sorts. He respected my bravery and took it upon himself to teach me to defend myself.”

“How old were you?”

“Six years old. Over the years, we enjoyed a hidden friendship because it was forbidden to mix with the other sex in Heaven. To mix with anyone really, but I had Faith, and I had Jed.”

He resumes stroking my back and I think about Jed fondly.

“You know, he left Heaven when he was sixteen years old.”

“Where did he go?”

“I don’t know. He was never spoken of again, but I missed him. I wish I knew if he was okay. Maybe that’s what gave me the courage to run myself.”

“How did you make that happen?” He says softly and I grin. “My best friend, Faith, met a biker called Jonny. He came from Heaven and escaped like Jed. Anyway, he came back and they, well, hit it off and she became pregnant.”

“That must have caused quite a scene.”

He chuckles softly and I nod. “It’s a very long story, but the result was he came for her, and I helped them escape. Subsequently, I was given a ride by one of the bikers and he gave me money and a phone and told me to call him if I needed help.”

He tenses again and stops stroking my back and jealousy laces his voice as he growls, “What biker? What happened?”

“I told you. He gave me a ride out of town and took me to the airport and paid for my ticket here. I still have his phone and just before I came to join you at breakfast, he called me.”

Killian sits up and twists my face to his and says in a rough voice, “What did you tell him?”

Once again, I witness the panic in his eyes, but this time I’m prepared for it and I smile and whisper, “I told him I didn’t need his help. That I was dealing with it.”

“Dealing with what?” He says through gritted teeth, and I lean closer and touch my lips to his.

“Dealing with life. I am making my own way and I don’t admit defeat easily. I’m happy with my choices and wouldn’t change a thing. However…”

He stares at me hard as I grin. “It’s always good to have options, don’t you think?”

I’m not sure why I thought it would be fun to poke the bear, but the scowl on his face chases away our easy conversation as he hisses, “Options. The only options available to you are the ones I give you. Do you understand?”

I should be angry, incensed, even. I should stop this now before we go in any deeper, but his words do something to my heart instead. They make me feel wanted, and that’s a powerful emotion to offer a girl who has never felt wanted in her life and as a result, the tears spill from my eyes and I whisper, “Thank you for wanting me, Killian.”

His eyes flash as he pulls my lips to his and kisses me so hard, I can’t breathe. It’s as if he is starving and I am his last meal and as our tongues clash and our breath joins us, I really believe I have everything I want holding me so possessively in his arms.

I am fast realizing he is a possessive man. Jealous and controlling, but for some reason I like it. It makes me secure and feel as if I can ask him anything and after another hour of him showing just how much he likes to control my body, we are lying together once again, my head on his chest while he plays with my hair, something I am fast realizing he loves to do.

“Tell me about your family, Killian. Will they be at our wedding?”

“Most of them. The important ones, anyway.”
