“Your parents?” I am intrigued by this man and want to know everything about him.

“No.”

“Why not?” I say sleepily, loving how good his fingers in my hair make me feel.

“My father has been banned from the island and my mother lives in Australia.”

“How come?” It all sounds very unusual because surely his mother and father live together.

He sighs and shifts up a little, his back against the padded headboard and he says bitterly. “My father turned his back on our family when he wanted out of the business. It’s everything to a Vieri. It’s what makes the blood flow in our veins. He wanted no part of it and is indifferent to the very machine that made us who we are today.”

“But surely family is more important than business?”

He stills, and I think I said the wrong thing when he growls ominously. “You will soon learn that businessisfamily to a Vieri. Everything we do is with business in mind. Surely you have understood that already.”

“I guess.” He reminds me of our own arrangement and I kind of get it.

“Tell me about your mother. Why does she live so far away?”

“Because she left my father and went to live in Australia to get as far away from him as possible.”

“And you. She left you.” I am horrified, and Killian shrugs as if it’s of no consequence. “She left all her children because she had no choice. We are Vieris and belong with our family. She understood that.”

“Weren’t you upset?”

“Were you when you ran away from your own parents?”

“You’re answering a question with a question again, but I’ll allow it this time because it proves a valid point.”

I turn to face him and grin impudently, and he surprises me by chuckling softly.

“You’re a surprising woman, Purity.”

“In a good way, I hope.” I grin and he cups my face in his hands and whispers, “You are a rare, exquisite creature. A unicorn, in fact. So trusting with the mind of a razor. I like that. I like that you question everything with no emotion. They are qualities I admire and rarely see in a woman.”

“Have you, shall we say, ‘met’ many women?”

He nods. “Of course.”

His answer isn’t surprising, but I don’t like it and he apparently approves of the way my eyes lower and my face falls because he pulls my lips to his and whispers, “But none I want to keep until now.”

As he kisses me softly, my entire body blooms. That’s how it feels, at least. It comes alive under his touch, and I surprise myself by kissing him back so deeply it’s as if only he can keep me alive.

His hand wraps around the back of my head and he bites my bottom lip, sucking my lower lip into his mouth and causing me to groan out loud. Something feels different. There’s more intimacy than before and I put it down to the fact he opened a little piece of his soul and allowed me to glimpse inside. He has revealed there is a human inside the machine after all, and I wonder about that.

He is the first man I have ever spoken to about anything, really. The first real conversation about emotions and the first man I have ever kissed. He is all my firsts wrapped into an intoxicating package and yet I have hardly scratched the surface because there are a lot more secrets to unravel hidden inside Killian Vieri.

CHAPTER27

KILLIAN

One hour before landing, I shake Purity awake, loving how exhausted she was when she finally fell asleep in my arms. I listened to her gentle breathing as I went over my plan. We have a long, hard road to travel, and I wonder if she is up to it. Purity isn’t used to walking, but I will be beside her every step of the way and I’m guessing she will stumble, just like the heels I have insisted she wear to practice. I will not let her fail, and I wonder what my grandparents will make of her when we show up.

We shower and dress and make our way into the cabin where there is a meal laid out waiting. Most of my men are in a different part of the aircraft, and the attendant is discreet and remains hidden in the galley. I prefer my solitude on flights, usually taking the opportunity to sleep and contemplate business. I have never entertained a woman for longer than a quick fuck before and then sent her back to the others. Gabriella mainly because she traveled with me as my assistant. It reminds me to ask Saint about her movements since I fired her.

But that can wait because I am hungry and I’m guessing Purity is too and as we sit facing one another, I love the freshly fucked face, staring back at me as if I am fucking God himself.

It empowers me. Nobody has ever looked at me as if I am a king. They fear me, desire me, want me even, but there is always a hint of fear hiding behind their eyes. They never question and never speak out of turn, which is why it’s refreshing to spend time with somebody who does.
