“Where are you from?” She enquires and I say without missing a beat.

“Heaven.”

She raises her eyes and I shrug. “The town Heaven, not the well… you know.”

“Of course.” She smiles but I can tell she thinks the wind blew the crazy in off the street and she peers at the screen and says, “There’s nothing in her diary.”

She appears thoughtful and I prepare to be sent packing, but then she glances up and says with a smile.

“I’ll call her. If you would like to take a seat, it shouldn’t take long.”

I smile gratefully because this woman is the first person I’ve met who is being kind to me, which means a lot to a girl who has spent her entire life expecting the worst of people.

I retreat to the black couch and sit perched on the edge with my hands clasped together on my lap, not really knowing what to expect now that I’m here.

I notice the woman talking into a headset and wonder about this place. Where I am from, there is no technology, no comfort and nothing that is considered unnecessary. Even the flowers here would be frowned on in Heaven, despite being a thing of such natural beauty, it should be celebrated.

Not there.

Not in a town that rules through fear and demands complete devotion to the lord and the reverend who delivers his teachings. Having been here for less than four hours already, I already know I prefer Chicago, despite how scary it is.

I glance up as the woman stands before me and says with a hint of pity in her expression. “Miss. Sinclair has asked that you wait. She may be some time, though.”

“I have time.” I reply with determination, and she nods.

“Okay. Would you like me to fetch some magazines? A coffee perhaps.”

I am disarmed by her kindness, and smile with relief, causing her to stare a little harder.

“I would like that, thank you.”

“Consider it done.”

As she turns to walk away, I say quickly, “Thank you.”

Her heels clicking on the polished floor is my response and as she heads back to her desk, I congratulate myself on being one step closer to my new life.

CHAPTER4

KILLIAN

Gabriella is seriously pissing me off, reminding me why I have rules, ones I broke with her and am now suffering the consequences of that.

“Just once more, Kill.”

She purrs as she lies entangled in my sheets, peering up at me with suggestive eyes as I sweep my fingers through my tousled hair.

“We’re late.” My response is curt because I hate the fact I continually allow myself to fuck this woman. Then again, it’s better the devil you know, and I happen to know Gabriella Sinclair extremely well indeed.

“It can wait.” She whines and I snap.

“Business canneverwait, and I am disappointed you even said that.”

She sighs and stretches out, her legs falling open in a move I’m convinced is to tempt me into defying my own words and I growl, “Close your fucking legs and stop acting like a greedy whore.”

My words have the desired effect and the frown on her face excites me way more than the sensual one as she says through gritted teeth. “You’re a bastard, Kill.”

“Deal with it.” I turn away and head to my bathroom, and it irritates me when says hopefully, “Do you want me to scrub your back and suck your dick clean?”
