Shade is almost a carbon copy of his brother, the same dark brooding stare and words that give nothing away. I try to make conversation and say with interest, “Are you married, Shade?”

“No.”

“Are you intending to marry?”

“No.” He glances down at me and smiles with a wicked twist to his lips. “I’m having too much fun to chain myself to one woman.”

I say nothing and gaze across at Killian dancing with his sister, and I wonder if he is regretting our marriage already.

Shade surprises me by saying, “Do you wish your parents were here, Purity?”

“Of course not.” I stare at him in surprise.

“I couldn’t wait to get away from them.”

He appears amused. “Then we agree on something. Most people would consider that strange. Luckily for you, we share your disregard for our own parents.”

“Killian told me they separated, and your mom lives in Australia. That must be a long journey to see her.”

“I wouldn’t know.” He shrugs.

I never want to see her again. I’m sure you understand.”

He points to nonna, who is swaying in Don Vieri’s arms with her head on his shoulder.

“Nonna is all the mother I need and always was.”

“Your grandparents are happy.” I say, loving how they smile at one another as if there is nobody else here.

“They fell in love. They are the lucky ones.”

Shade sighs. “I should return you to your husband if I value my life.”

I turn and see Killian staring at his brother with a murderous rage and it makes me giggle. “He does appear angry. Perhaps Serena stepped on his toes.”

Shade grins. “Something like that.”

As we leave the dance floor, Killian steps forward and glares at his brother. “You took your time.”

Shade shrugs. “Point me in the direction of another woman and I’ll go. Your wedding sucks, brother. I thought the best man always ends up bedding the bridesmaid. Thanks for that.”

He jerks his thumb at his sister, making me giggle at the hint of a smile on Killian’s lips. “You’re welcome. Now, if you’ll excuse us.”

He rests his arm around my shoulder and says loudly, “Enjoy the rest of your evening. It’s been a long day.”

A huge cheer deafens me, and I’m surprised when a loud bang makes me jump. Killian pulls me into his arms, and we stare in wonder at the fireworks lighting up the night sky.

I have never seen anything like it and clap my hands in delight as the music gets louder to serenade the display and I stare at a spectacle I have never seen the like of before. If I could bottle this moment and keep it to cherish, I would, and the tears fall as I stare up at the exploding sky. I am so happy, so sure I have done the right thing and I am fast on my way to falling in love with the man who made it happen.

Maybe one day he will feel the same.

After many kisses and congratulations,we head back up the stairs and despite my weariness, I am eager to be alone with my husband.

We did it. We signed the contract and now our life begins.

We reach the room and I squeal when Killian sweeps me into his arms and carries me through the door, kissing me deeply before placing me gently on the huge bed. The room is lit by lamplight, but the darkness in the man I just married excites me.
