"Who? Oh, you watched the broadcast. That was one of my friends."

"They said you invited her."

"Yes, I did."

"Why not me?"

Ethan faces me as he takes off his jacket.

"Olivia, what's wrong? You're acting strange."

I grit my teeth.

"What do I mean to you? Am I just a bed warmer till you find someone you can show up in public with? If so, I assure you, you don't need to bother wooing me."

Ethan's eyebrows furrow, and I can sense his anger, but I ignore it.

"Olivia, what are you talking about? Have my words and actions not gotten through? Do you think I did all this to sleep with you? I invited Diane because my company needed a publicity stunt, and she knows this."

Ethan groans and looks away.

"Ugh, I can't believe this. I’m doing everything I can here. That was just a PR stunt I had to do. Nothing more! Please don’t judge me like this."

"I judge you by your actions, by what I see."

"Not all is what it seems."

I turn away from him as well.

"And how many publicity stunts till what we have falls through?" I whisper.

Ethan turns to his room.

"I think we need some space."

"Something we can agree on."

"Areyouthereyet?"Coach's voice emerges from the phone's speaker, and I press harder on the accelerator.

"Not yet. Just on my way." I say, making sure not to let panic reach my voice and keep it tucked in the dark corner of my gut.

"Okay. Drive safe and let me know what happens at the auction."

"Will do!" I say, feigning excitement, but I’m sure he didn’t buy it.

He says, "Hmph," and ends the call.

Coach can be a jerk sometimes, but I know he cares for me, even if he doesn’t show it normally. What are normal ways, anyway?

As I drive my car around the corner of the street, my mind turns from Coach to Olivia. Olivia Marshall. The girl who has made my life a living rollercoaster. I shake my head, hoping to remove her from my system but with little success. I can’t think of her right now.

I rev the car's engine and glance at my watch to see it striking five. Shit. The auction is going to begin any second now. I spot the building where it’s supposed to be held and quickly park my car in the parking lot, which is overflowing with expensive-looking vehicles.

I lock the door and take long, quick strides before checking my reflection in the tinted glass of my car. I look presentable. I guess? Walking towards the hall entrance, I hold my breath, trying to absorb my surroundings without seeming too flabbergasted. This is not what I imagined it would be…I have been to auctions before, but none can match the exotic feel of this one.
