“Hey,” I say. I close my notebook and stash it in my backpack.

Cailin looks up from her book and sets her gold-flecked eyes on mine as her response.

“Do you want to stop reading about fictional characters in passionate love scenes and make our own?”

Cailin throws her book across the bus. The bookmark floats through the air and lands a few feet away from her novel. She doesn’t seem to even notice. Her gaze is set hungrily on me. Then, Cailin playfully pounces on me. Completely unexpected and I love it. I’ve yet to see this dominant side. She straddles me and just when I think she’s coming in for the kill, she slides her fingers under my armpit.

“I can’t take it!” I wail under shrieks of laughter.

Cailin keeps tickling me, but I’m not letting her get away with it. I thrust forward with my hips and reposition us so that she’s beneath me and I’m straddling her. I give us both a few seconds to catch our breaths. In between gasps for air and laughs, I manage to distract Cailin enough to sneak my hands under her feet.

“Oh my gosh, you got me. You got me!” she says. “Truce! Let’s make a truce!”

I love this spur of the moment child-like play. It’s just what we’ve needed to lighten things up. We’re dealing with some heavy situations, but we can’t let those topics consume all of our interactions. But the next time I straddle Cailin, we’re going to have a different round of fun.

JAX SLATER SPOTTED GETTING COZY AT CAFÉ WITH MYSTERY WOMAN

CAILIN

I’ve beenon a few different types of first dates. I’ve made the mistake of letting friends set me up on a blind date in college, only to get stood up, and end up meeting another guy who asked to buy me dinner. I’ve met a guy I connected with online and then had him duck out after an hour to go meet his next date. I’ve gone to the movies, mini golf, and hung out with groups of friends on other first dates. But this is my first date with a man I’ve crushed on for decades, already made out with, and is technically my boss.

Jax holds my hand as we venture out to explore the town we’ve stopped in for a few hours. The brisk morning air hits my face and makes me feel alive. I still have my job, I’m walking through a town where I’ve never been, and I’m on my first official date with Jax. I’m rising like the summer sun. I wonder if people are going to notice him and come up and ask for autographs. But since it’s still morning in a small town, I think we’re safe.

“This is nice,” I say.

“Not a bad start for our first date. But I need to find somewhere to take you to dine.” Jax surveys the signs outside each establishment.

“Maybe we can find an app to point us in the right direction,” I say.

“That would take away half the fun of this adventure,” Jax says. “We need to find the best or worst place so we can look back on it and tell stories.”

“Are you planning ways to create memories with me, Jax?”

“I don’t think I’ll ever forget anything we’ve been through so far.” Jax speaks on behalf of both of us.

“You can say that again.” I stop mid-stride and look at Jax. “Hey, what do you eat for breakfast? Are you a big fan of the first meal of the day?” I realize I don’t know these basic things about him, but I want to know them all.

“When I’m home, I usually have a black coffee and a protein shake to start the day. Then, after my morning workout, I go big.” We continue walking. There’s silence except for our voices and a few birds chirping.

“Like a morning feast?”

“Eggs, yogurt, fruit.” Gotta start my day right, you know. What about you?”

“I drink my coffee black too. Not many people do.”

“I totally pictured you as a fancy latte girl.”

“Oh, don’t be mistaken. My afternoon coffees are quite fancy when I get out on the town.”

“I knew it.”
