This is the moment.

Jax takes my shaking hand and leads me to the bedroom. Even though we’re the only people on the bus, he closes the door.

JAX SLATER SAYS NO ONE ELSE COMES CLOSE TO CAILIN MCCALL

CAILIN

Our legs are tangledand I’m too blissful to move. I’m lying in bed naked with Jax Slater. Something I’ve dreamed about for over a decade. But this was beyond my most intense fantasy. It may have been the first time Jax had a chance to ravage my body, but there was no fumbling. He took me to o-town and I’ll never be the same.

“That was incredible,” Jax says as he leans his head into his pillow.

This pleasure has made up for years of being in a marriage where we had sex out of obligation. I forgot how incredible sex can be with someone you’re attracted to inside and out. Collin and I had that when we started dating, but it quickly fizzled. Today alone, Jax and I saw our relationship progress leaps and bounds. From candid conversation to intimate moments, I feel like he knows me better than Collin ever did. Jax cares to ask questions and digs deep into my desires and dreams. And that is the most attractive thing about him. Though, his six-pack abs are a close second.

I trace his tattoos with my fingers, savoring the moment that I’m seeing them up close. For years, I stared at them on posters that lined my walls. Each one reveals a part of Jax. And I want to know the meaning behind every drop of ink.

“What’s your favorite tattoo?”

Jax moans. “That’s a tough one. I’ve collected them through all different times in my life. The most recent one is on my back.” He sits up and it’s the first time I realize I’m looking at the tattoos on his back. “See over on my left shoulder? The skeleton key?”

I see it all right. Goosebumps chill my arms. “You have a skeleton key tattoo?”

His voice reveals concern as he asks, “Is that bad? It’s a tribute to my grandma. I got it when she passed away. Remember I told you her house was old? All the doors had skeleton key locks on them. It drove me crazy because I could never lock my door and have privacy. But when I reflect back on that house and growing up, that always reminds me of my grandma.”

“I actually love it.” I hold up my inner wrist that is usually decorated in bracelets. “I just got a skeleton keyhole.”

“No way,” Jax says. He takes my wrist and strokes the tattoo. I’m branded by his touch.

“It symbolizes all the diaries I kept growing up and I got it as a reminder to always chase my dreams.”

“You’re extraordinary.” Jax raises his eyes to meet mine as light peeks through the curtain shade.

“This is pretty amazing. I feel like everything is just oddly falling into place. Do you believe in fate?” I start to massage his shoulders, taking full advantage of the opportunity to run my hands up and down his back.

“Fate? I don’t know. I just play the cards I’m dealt,” Jax says while he stretches his neck from side to side.

“Well, I do. I believe we can manifest what we want, and this right here, is the universe sending us a sign.” How else can I justify what is happening in my life right now? I lean my face forward and rest it on his shoulder from behind.

“What’s it saying?” Jax asks me.

“Maybe that we are a perfect fit?” Dare I be optimistic?

“Oh, we definitely fit perfectly,” Jax says, pulling me back in front of him and onto his lap. I can feel his excitement throbbing against me.

There’s no way we’re getting out of bed anytime soon.

Cailin and I pull ourselves out of the bed to get some water and food. I’m in dire need of hydration. I’ve never spent so long in bed, tenderly exploring someone and making sure her needs are met. I have a desire to deeply fulfill Cailin.
