“You should pick your weapon of choice,” I said, nodding to the other trunks sitting on the floor next to us.

While Kinsley opened the first, I took the memento box and tucked it in the attached bathroom behind the pipes under the sink. It was as good a place as any for now.

When I came back into the room, Kinsley was wielding a sword. It was one that required two hands to handle, but she didn’t seem to have any problems keeping it upright.

“You want that one?” I asked as I opened the second chest.

She peeked inside, then set the sword on the bed. “It’s a contender.”

I handed her a set of matching daggers that she set next to the sword after swiping them through the air a few times. Then she tried out throwing stars that ended back in the box along with the nunchucks, a flail, a sickle, and lastly, a boomerang with deadly points at its ends.

“So, the daggers or the sword?” I asked her when we were done.

She tapped a finger over her lips. “As much as I love the sword, I think the daggers will be better, assuming they will disappear and reappear with my clothes. I could strap them to my thighs.”

Picturing her with weapons strapped anywhere on her body had me thinking very conflicting thoughts.

“They’ll be safe when you shift, just like your clothes, thanks to the necklace Lia gave you,” I said. “The daggers are a good choice.” I picked up the sword and winked at her. “I’ll take this one.”

She glared at me. “I see how you work, Grayson Barrett.”

I leaned forward and captured her lips. “I wasn’t trying to hide it.”

Lia opened the door, putting off much calmer vibes than she had been when we’d left her. “Markus is resting in bed. He’ll be good by morning.” She peeked at the boxes. “Are you sharing?”

I waved a hand over the remaining boxes. “Pick your favorite. I’ll have Ryder take these when we have what we want.” I put the sword back on the bed and grabbed one of Kinsley’s daggers, squeezing the handle hard. “As a reminder, none of these are ordinary weapons.”

The tip of the blade flickered with a blue flame that traveled down to the hilt and I held it out in front of me. “These will cut through any spell or armor, so be careful with them while they have this flame.”

As soon as I released my hold and let the dagger balance in my palm, the flames extinguished.

Kinsley stole the dagger back and grabbed the other, her jaw agape. “That’s fucking badass.”

Lia chuckled at her enthused friend, and I smiled softly.

My mate was smart and strong, but when she showed her innocence, it was one of the most endearing things I’d ever seen.

And it was something I intended to protect with my life.

Chapter34

KINSLEY

We’d spent the previous evening preparing for the battle and had gone to bed early. Well, we had headed to our room early. Sleep was hard to come by when we knew we were going to war in the morning. At least, it was for me.

I knew Grayson was worried about me, but I also knew he believed in my capabilities and strengths. That went a long way in helping me feel confident in what we were about to do.

The sun hadn’t risen yet, but our house had been up for almost an hour. When Ryder and Tuck had come over to get the trunks from Grayson the night before, they’d brought more clothes with them, including black pants that were supposed to be “teeth” resistant, per Ryder’s explanation.

When I put them on, they felt more like supple leather, and I was headed to test them with one of the kitchen knives when Grayson stopped me.

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“To the kitchen.”

He raised a brow. “Are you still hungry?”

I was overly full from the breakfast Lia had cooked, so I shook my head. “I just want to try something.”
