I heard footsteps behind us and slowed my pace a little. “Don’t let go, Sammy.”

My airways were almost crushed with how tightly he held on, but that didn’t stop my movements.

I forced my body forward, rolling over Sammy with as little pressure on him as possible, and shoved both daggers in the air.

The wolf I’d heard behind us jumped just as I’d hoped he would, so instead of crashing into Sammy on my back, the chocolate-colored wolf flew over us and his guts fell from his stomach, thanks to my perfectly timed cut.

I rolled to the side but didn’t exactly miss the mess I’d made. My arm was covered in blood and things I didn’t want to look at too closely, but there wasn’t time to be disgusted. Though, based on Sammy’s gagging, he thought otherwise.

Scrambling back to my feet, I doubled-checked that the kid was still secure. “Are you good back there?”

I felt his head nod against my shoulder. “That was…”

“Let’s not talk about it,” I said gruffly as I resumed my running.

This time, there was no one behind us, and the sound of snarling wolves grew fainter.

My chest constricted as I ran farther from Grayson, but I knew he’d be okay. He was probably flamed out by now, burning those other fuckers to ash.

At least, that was what I was going to picture as I ran past the last of the residential areas and into the trees.

The bunker was only another fifty yards ahead. I could see the boulder that it was hidden under. We were so fucking close.

Until we weren’t.

Hazel and a man I assumed to be Johnathon—based on his similarities to the picture I’d seen of him—shimmered into view, right in our way.

I skidded to a stop, raising both flaming daggers in front of me.

If these assholes thought they were going to get to Sammy, they were going to be quickly proven wrong.

Hazel’s familiar emerald eyes wrinkled at the sides as she smirked. “It’s lovely to see you again, Kinsley. It’s been a long time.”

Her long, dark, almost-black, purple hair draped over her shoulders, covering most of the red corset she wore over what I assumed to be a one-piece black leather number that covered her arms, torso, and legs.

“Not long enough,” I easily replied.

Sammy stayed quiet behind me, keeping his head tucked tightly against the back of my neck.

Hazel tsked. “Now, that’s not any way to greet one of the women who helped raise you. I only wanted to introduce you to my friend here.”

She gestured to Johnathon. His hair had more grey than black in it like the picture we’d seen and the scar along his forehead wrinkled heavily around the edges, but it was the glow of his silver eyes that captured my attention most.

“I’ve been searching for you for some time now, Kinsley,” he said inquisitively. “Though, I had been looking for someone named Bethany. Not Kinsley. It’s a pity the coven took the name your mother gave you away when that was the only thing you had left from her.”

He was trying to fuck with my mind, but it wasn’t going to work. He might have thought he knew who I was, thanks to whatever Hazel had told him, but poking at my past and how I’d been abandoned was not a blow that would break me.

Not anymore. Especially now that I’d found my family.

I took a step to the right, keeping both of my hands out still. “Yep. Such a pity. Now, what the fuck do you want?”

Johnathon glowered. “Apparently, the coven didn’t teach you any manners.”

“I only reserve those for people who deserve them.” I took another step to the right and a quick glance at the boulder. My eyes briefly caught movement that I hoped would be someone who could take Sammy from me.

My wolf was dying to escape and rip these fuckers to shreds, but I couldn’t until I no longer had the boy to protect.

“So, what do you want from me?” I asked again, hoping to buy myself some time. Plus, it would be nice to know why this fucker framed me for murder.
