My wolf spit out the blood, and I took a step toward Grayson but froze when I heard someone scream, “Dad! Dad, where are you?”

Fuck. It was Sammy. He hadn’t made it to the bunker.

It took two glances at the building to my right to finally spot his blond hair poking out from behind a short wooden fence.

I wanted to tell Grayson what I was doing, but there was no time for that.

If I’d heard the boy, then others would have, too, and I was the only one between opponents.

Making a snap decision, I raced for Sammy and shifted back to my human form when his eyes went wide at my arrival.

“What are you still doing here?” I chastised.

His chin trembled. “I just wanted to help.”

Damn it.This kid was something else.

“Can you shift?” I asked, hoping we could make a quick escape through the trees.

Tears fell down his cheeks, and he looked down at his shoes. “I tried, but it’s not working.” He hiccupped. “I’m sorry, Kinsley.”

“It’s okay,” I promised, thinking of the best way to keep the boy safe.

Water-filled eyes looked up at me. “Where’s my dad?”

“I don’t know, but I know he’ll feel a lot better if he knows you’re away from the fight. I’m going to get you out of here.” Without waiting for him to respond, I picked him up and slid him around my back. “Hold on as tightly as you can, bud, and watch my back. I’m going to need both of my hands.”

He whimpered as his heels pressed themselves deeply against my stomach. I flinched from the pressure on my wounds that still ached there but kept moving.

I pulled the daggers out of their sheaths and squeezed the hilts until blue flames covered the blades.

“Whoa,” Sammy whispered.

“Watch our backs,” I reminded him, and then I began to sprint in the direction of the bunker.

Chapter35

KINSLEY

It wasn’t long before we caught the attention of the red-eyed wolves, as well as Grayson. He let out a menacing howl that made me think he wanted me to stop, but I couldn’t. I had to get Sammy to safety. If anything happened to him…

I couldn’t even finish the thought. This kid was going to be okay. Just like I’d promised.

“Left,” Sammy shouted, and I swung my hand in that direction.

The dagger still flaming in my hand slid cleanly through the silver wolf with crimson eyes, taking his head right off.

“Hell yeah!” Sammy said.

I chuckled but still reprimanded him. “Language, bud.”

The other wolves slowed in their attacks once they’d seen what I’d done to the first, but that didn’t mean we were going to be left alone.

I assumed I was the specific target that they’d been told to kill, which meant I should have handed Sammy off to someone else, but I’d only just thought of that, and none of our wolves were coming to help me.

They were all being stopped by the attacking pack.

I should have realized that wasn’t a good thing, but in the moment, all I could think about was getting the boy on my back away from the fight.
