His eyes darkened, and he stared so long at my face, I was sure he was seeing straight into my soul.Fuck.Why did I want to reach forward, grab the back of his neck, and find out what he tasted like? Though, maybe now wouldn’t have been the best time. Vomit breath probably wasn’t all that attractive, but what would I really know about that?

I was twenty-eight years old, and I’d never been kissed. That was what being the pariah of your coven did, made it so you had very little social skills and zero life experiences.

Though, I’d read books. I could picture a smolder, and this dude had his perfected with a sprinkle of asshole.

He stepped forward, avoiding my mess, and reached past me into the jeep. His fingers lifted the latch on the storage box in front of me, then pulled out a napkin, shoving it at me. “Clean yourself up. I don’t want to smell you the entire drive back.”

I forced my lashes to flutter at him. “You’re my very own Prince Charming.”

His eyes squinted as if he didn’t get the reference. To be expected, though. I didn’t presume a psycho like him read too many books.

Maybe we could both teach each other a thing or two about life…

Hell. What was wrong with me?

Mate or not… Sexy as fuck to look at or not… Dude still tried to kill me.

But he didn’t do it in the end, a hopeful voice whispered in my mind.

Maybe not, but that had nothing to do with him thinking I was telling the truth and everything to do with fate.

That fickle bitch.

She’d done me dirty this time.

Chapter5

GRAYSON

Exactly thirty minutes after I’d gotten back into the driver’s seat, Kinsley cleared her throat while keeping her eyes on the center of the road, which I’d advised her to do so she wouldn’t get sick again. Not because I was being nice, but because we didn’t have time for her weak stomach.

“How close was I with ‘Richard’?” she asked, a bit of glee in her tone and a smile playing on her cherry lips.

“Grayson, so not even a little close,” I muttered.

Her fingers danced over her knees, and she chanced a glance my way. “What about a last name?”

“No.” If she didn’t already know it, she didn’t need to.

The fact that she seemed truly inept about all things of the outside world had me second-guessing everything that I was doing. I hated to admit that I was worried the only reason I was questioning anything was because of the bond. The longer she sat next to me, the more it was building.

Uncertainty wasn’t something I was familiar with, and I fucking hated it.

Had I been sent to kidnap, and possibly kill, an innocent woman? Had I missed the omissions from Johnathon’s words, or had I heard what I’d wanted to once I’d seen those kids?

I didn’t think anyone knew about my family since their deaths had occurred before I’d made a name for myself, but if Johnathon had figured out my past and used that to motivate me, did he also know who I was beyond the wolf shifter I portrayed?

That question was quickly rising on my list of priorities.

Kinsley gasped. “Stop!” I ignored her and she reached over to punch me in the arm. “I said, fucking stop.”

My foot slammed on the brakes, not because I was listening to her, but because it was time to teach her a fucking lesson in manners.

“You can’t just—” Before I could finish my sentence, she was already unbuckled and had leapt from her seat, not bothering to use the door handle, and landed on the road.

She ran for the forest, and I growled loudly. Was she seriously fucking running from me again?

Once I was out of the jeep and headed in her direction, I realized she hadn’t made it far. Not only that, but I saw the reason for her panic.
