A white horse—no, wait. That was a damn unicorn lying in the grass.

Kinsley was leaning over the fallen being, her hands covered in its dark-blue blood. She looked back at me, tears in her eyes. “We have to help her.”

Fuck.No, we really didn’t.

“She’s as good as dead, based on that amount of blood,” I said harshly. “Now, let’s get out of here before I have to kill the people who did this because they’re still looking for a fight.”

I reached for Kinsley’s arm, but she jerked away from my touch. “I’m not leaving until she’s passed or we help her somehow. Nobody should die alone.”

Her sincerity felt like a smack across the face.

The more she spoke—at least, when she wasn’t trying to annoy me to death—the more I realized that whoever had sent me after her was wrong. Though, there was still more to this story, and I needed to decide if sticking around was worth potentially starting something I didn’t want to finish.

Kinsley stroked the animal’s matted white fur. It appeared as if something had slashed a sword down her front flank, but then I noticed that crimson also coated the pale purple horn protruding from her head.

I glanced around, and about ten feet behind the unicorn, there was a dead body with a sword lying next to him.

My head tilted down toward the mystical animal I’d previously believed was extinct. “Can you shift?”

Her eyes blinked twice, and she blew air through her nose that made me think she was frustrated, so I took that as ano.

“If you care so much about her wellbeing, then heal her,” I said to Kinsley, hoping this would be the moment she revealed herself.

Her light-blue eyes looked up at me with continuous tears falling down her cheeks. “I would if I could, but I… I’m a broken witch.”

That wasn’t the first time she’d said that to me, and I hated that my instinct was to believe her. I hated even more that I’d been duped and still couldn’t be sure who was lying.

The unicorn nuzzled Kinsley’s hand and made a softer whinny noise.

Shit.Maybe I had my answer right there.

From what I knew about unicorn shifters, they were some of the most powerful beings in the world, born from a strong shifter that mated with a fae or angel, unless they were a dark unicorn born from a demon. Regardless of their heritage, they could tell good intentions from bad, could hide their true identities, could glimpse the future, and hell, I was pretty sure they could even heal…

My gaze flicked back to the dead man. He was a wolf shifter. I could scent as much. While he might have been a good hunter, there was no way he should have been able to get the jump on this particular supernatural.

“You’re not even hurt, are you?” I asked with a slight growl to my words.

Kinsley gasped at me. “Look at her…or him. Of course it’s hurt.”

“Unicorns are only female. So, it’s definitely ‘her’ and no, she’s not,” I said with absolute certainty. “You can quit the act and shift, but you better be prepared to tell us why you were waiting for us.”

Kinsley’s shocked face was another thing that had me beginning to finally accept that she really was who she was saying, but I shoved those thoughts aside for the moment.

The unicorn actually rolled her turquoise eyes while silver energy shimmered over her body. The gaping wound stitched itself back together before she got up on four legs. Kinsley was up and moving a few steps closer to me as the opal-white unicorn swished her iridescent colored tail back and forth.

“Shift,” I demanded.

Her head lowered, pointing the tip of her horn at me.

“You don’t scare me,” I droned.

She made a weird noise, then her body covered with that same silver power. Within the blink of an eye, she was standing on two feet, dressed in black leggings and an oversized, light-pink T-shirt.

She glared at me, then moved her still-turquoise eyes to Kinsley and stepped forward.

Before I could stop anything from happening, the unicorn hugged her and squealed. “Oh, I’m so excited to finally meet you!”

I had no fucking clue where this glee was coming from, but one thing I knew was that an already fucked situation just got even more complicated.
