“Fuck!” I screamed into the forest.

I should have stepped in. What did it matter who delivered the final blow? I shouldn’t have given a shit about this House or what they’d think of her.

She was mine to protect, and I’d failed.

A shadow passed over me, and I nearly pulled my sword back out until I caught Lia being carried by Markus, who set her on the other side of Kinsley. His jaw was tight, and it seemed like a forced effort for him to release her.

Lia looked up at him. “She’s your sister. I have to try.”

I didn’t know what was going on, but if Lia still had enough magic in her to heal my mate, I needed her to fucking do it now.

“Save her,” I ordered, unable to conjure any other words over my fears.

Markus reached over Kinsley’s prone form and grabbed my shirt by the collar, his eyes dark with unfiltered fury. “She’ll fucking do it when she’s ready and not a moment sooner.”

I ripped his hand from my clothes. “Kinsley’s brother or not, touch me again like that and I’ll fucking end you.”

“I might just ask you to,” he muttered as his gaze went back to Lia and I released him.

The unicorn was barely holding herself up, and I tried to force myself to empathize with him.

Both of our mates were in bad shape. If Lia gave too much to heal Kinsley, she could die and yet…I was a big enough asshole that I didn’t speak up. I didn’t try to stop her, because Kinsley dying wasn’t an option I was willing to live with.

I couldn’t lose her.

“What the hell happened here?” Ryder asked, but nobody answered him.

My focus was on my mate, and that was where it would stay until she opened her eyes for me.

I wrapped my fingers around her limp paw while I watched Lia press her palms over the wolf’s chest.

“Don’t you fucking die,” Markus whispered in Lia’s ear when her faint magic began to cover my mate.

Lia didn’t respond to him. Instead, she closed her eyes and slumped forward so limply that Markus needed to hold her up while she worked on Kinsley.

I watched with strangled breath, helpless to do anything other than sit there and hope my reason for living didn’t stop breathing when I’d only just found her.

Lia groaned, and Markus tried to pull her back, but she at least had the strength to keep her hands pressed over Kinsley. “I need to save her. It’s why I’m here.”

I was certain Markus disagreed with that, but this time, he kept quiet. Just like I selfishly was.

I hadn’t noticed him leave, but Ryder’s wolf came running back toward us, then skidded to a stop next to me, carrying a brown leather bag in his mouth, which he dropped next to my feet.

My lips parted so I could tell him what I thought about his wolf kicking dirt up over my unconscious mate, but he shifted back first and kicked the bag closer to me. “Pour that into Kinsley’s mouth.”

“What is it?” I asked while grabbing the bag and opening it.

Inside was a glass vial filled with some sort of green liquid.

“Magic that will save her life without killing Lia,” Ryder answered.

Before I’d even taken a second to inspect the vial, Markus snatched the potion from my hands. “I’ll fucking do it if you won’t.”

My growl gave him pause and I gently, so as not to crack the glass, took the potion back. “You won’t fucking touch her.”

“Will the two of you shut the fuck up and help her already?” Lia grumbled, eyeing the green liquid that I noticed also had orange flecks of something inside. “I’ve seen that before. It will work.”

She slumped back against Markus, and I kneeled forward, ripping the top of the bottle off with my teeth as my other hand reached for my mate. My fingers carefully parted her muzzle before inserting the vial as far back into her mouth as I could.
