The wolf Kinsley was fighting was fucking huge. Unnaturally so.

One glance behind them, and I found Hazel leaning against a rock with her eyes closed. Magic flickered off of her, but she was barely moving.

That dumb bitch was giving the energy she needed to live to the wolf I presumed to be Johnathon. That was the only scenario that made sense for what I was seeing, but I was quickly going to end this madness.

Or at least help Kinsley to do so.

Her wolf was glowing like normal, but the white sparks around her weren’t as bright as I was used to seeing, which told me she was far more injured than I could see from where I stood.

Without wasting any more time, I shifted back to my human form and pulled the sword out from the sheath on my back.

The blade was magically enhanced like Kinsley’s daggers, but not with flames. No, this weapon had tendrils of electric power that moved along the steel surface while I held the hilt with two hands.

Noiselessly, I crept through the trees and approached Hazel. She didn’t even flinch when I was right behind her. Though, her vulnerability didn’t deter me from what I needed to do.

Two-handed, I lifted the sword up and then quickly brought it down, the blade slicing through Hazel’s neck with ease.

Her eyes widened from the impact, but no sound came from her open lips.

Wisps of magic rose from her body and then headed straight for my sword that eagerly soaked up the energy while her head tilted and rolled to the ground.

Blood pooled around her neck and shoulders, but I didn’t look long enough to be elated by the death.

Instead, my stare moved to my mate and the fucker who was trying to kill her.

I thought to help her more directly, but when I saw Kinsley’s opponent start to shrink in size, I forced myself to stay put. If she was meant to be Alpha Supreme, she had to try to finish this fight herself. She had to show this House that she was capable of protecting them in the ways I knew she was.

If I thought for one second that she was too injured to end Johnathon on her own, though, I’d gladly step in. Alpha Supreme position be damned.

It wasn’t worth her life.

The pewter-colored wolf trembled as the magic that had been charging him swiftly left his body. Kinsley moved to attack while he was distracted, but thankfully, she paused. Neither of us had any idea what the power might do to her if she got too close before it was done returning to the earth.

Within a minute, Johnathon was nothing more than a scraggly wolf, several inches smaller than Kinsley and not even close to her mass.

I saw the hesitation in Kinsley’s wolf. She didn’t want to kill him now that it was too easy of a death, but if she didn’t, she would be sending a message in the worst way possible.

Before I could verbalize that, Johnathon lurched forward, trying to bite her face off, but even with a limp, Kinsley was faster than he was.

Mercifully, she whipped around and clamped down on the wolf’s neck, biting down until the cracking of bones sounded around us and the wolf went limp in her hold.

She released Johnathon, letting him fall to the ground in a heap. Her wolf took several steps toward me, but I was already running for her.

With the sword back in its sheath, I dropped to my knees and gently held the head of Kinsley’s wolf. She blinked slowly, once then twice.

“Kinsley?” The world felt as if it had dropped out from underneath me as she wavered, then fell to the ground.

I had a good enough hold on her head that I was able to help lower her, but when I saw that her chest was hardly moving, all air inside me became lodged in my throat.

No. This wasn’t happening. She’d won. Johnathon was dead.

My hand stroked over her wolf. “Kinsley, open your eyes,” I demanded, but her wolf only whimpered in reply.

In the distance, I could hear people, or possibly wolves, coming, but my eyes wouldn’t move from my mate’s face.

Her breathing grew shallower by the second, and I didn’t know how to fucking fix her.

How could I have not seen how hurt she was when I’d first arrived?
