Kinsley’s arms hung there loosely. “Uh…you, too. I’m glad you’re okay.”

The unicorn backed up a pace. She flicked dark blue, nearly midnight-colored hair over her shoulder and the moonlight made her brawny skin seem as if it were almost sparkling. There was a round, youthfulness to her face, but the way her turquoise eyes assessed me made me think she was much older than her twenties.

“Of course, I am,” the unicorn said cheerfully. “I’m Lia, and you’re Kinsley.” Then, she pointed at me and glared. “And you’re Grayson Barrett.”

Fucking hell, this wasn’t good.

Kinsley glanced between the two of us, again seeming confused as hell about everything happening. “What happened to you, and how do you know us?”

Lia smiled softly and raised a flippant hand in the air. “Oh, nothing happened to me that’s important now you’re here.” Then she looked at me again, ignoring Kinsley’s second question. “Have you figured it out yet?”

I glowered at her. “Figured what out?”

“Do I have to do everything?” she muttered, more to herself than to either of us, then pressed a hand over Kinsley’s chest.

A bright light grew over Kinsley, and her mouth went slack, but she wasn’t tensing up, so I didn’t assume she was in pain. And I didn’t want to admit that was something that would have bothered me immensely.

When Lia stopped whatever she was doing, she asked pointedly, “And now?”

I ignored the cocky unicorn and focused on Kinsley. When I’d first seen her, I’d thought it was weird I couldn’t sense much power from her, but I’d thought a smart witch who was stealing the lifeforce from children probably wouldn’t flaunt that around.

Then, I’d just dismissed the lack of magic for…well, for nothing. I’d been too fucking distracted by her to pay close attention to anything that seemed off.

Now, though, I was still sensing energy coming from Kinsley, but there was something else there that hadn’t been before—or just not as obviously, because there was no way I would have missed that.

“You’re a wolf shifter?” I asked, distrust lacing my darkly spoken words.

Kinsley laughed right in my face. “You’re hilarious.”

“Oh.” Lia’s eyes widened, and then she grabbed both of Kinsley’s shoulders before bending her forward so their foreheads could press together.

Kinsley’s eyes turned to saucers then darted my way, but I wasn’t stepping in. I wanted to know what the hell was going on and what I’d gotten myself into.

Lia made a humming noise, but no other visible energy showed like it had before. They stood together until Kinsley finally relaxed and closed her eyes. Another minute after that, she finally gasped and stumbled back. “How…? No.” Her head shook furiously. “That’s not possible.”

The unicorn nodded. “There is very little that’s impossible in this world now, something you’re going to be learning a lot about soon.”

“What does that mean?” I demanded.

Lia turned and stepped toward me, but I backed up, my chest rumbling loudly. “Don’t fucking touch me.”

She sighed and brushed thick strands of hair behind her ear. “Listen to me, Grayson. I’m not here to trick you or get in your way.” She pointed back to Kinsley. “I’m here to protect her. Unfortunately, you’re a part of her now. So, you can either accept that I’m not going anywhere and make this easier on all of us. Or we can have it out right here and now, then move on. Either way, the three of us are going to get in that jeep and head west.”

Fucking future-seeing supernaturals.

When I merely glared at her and crossed my arms over my chest, she smirked in return. “You know I’m telling the truth.”

Sure as shit, I did, but then again…maybe not. Maybe the powers I kept mostly hidden from the world weren’t working the way they should have been. I’d allowed my emotions to be distracted by the image of the dead children, then the bond appearing, and Kinsley not being anything like I’d expected. Now, we’d been joined by a fucking unicorn.

For the first time in forever, I wasn’t sure what to believe, and that did something to my insides that I didn’t care for.

“Prove it,” I said.

She didn’t hesitate to reach out and lay her palm on the center of my chest. As soon as she’d touched me, I sucked in a breath and closed my eyes.

Images of me with my baby sister, Addie, flashed through my mind, and then of me shifted into my flaming-green wolf while Addie giggled from her spot in the grass.

Her dark curls bounced over her shoulders, and her dimpled cheeks puffed up as she smiled brightly.
