Then again, I never thought I’d be a wolf shifter instead of a broken witch, either.

Was I really a wolf shifter? How could I have never transformed before? I might not have ever been out in the real world, but I didn’t think a wolf could be suppressed for years without the human losing their mind.

“Why don’t we get in the vehicle?” Lia suggested. “It might not be safe out here for much longer.”

Grayson sneered at her. “What do you know?”

She winked at him. “I know what I’ve already said. You can either choose to believe me or walk away from your mate like you previously intended. It’s not like you need whatever they offered you to bring her in.”

“Who told you about me?” I asked him. Not that the answer really made a difference. Grayson couldn’t kill me, and I no longer had to go with him.

Though, that didn’t mean I wanted to flee from the psychopath just yet.

I knew I should have just told Lia to take me to Fire and Fluorite, but thanks to whatever magical pull I felt toward this deliciously dark demon, I wanted him to want to come with us.

His hands fisted at his sides, and he ground his teeth, first looking at Lia. “I do things because I want to, not because I need anything. And I’m not walking away. We’re going to No Man’s Land, and I’m going to figure out why I was lied to.”

Oh, thank fuck. He finally believed me. Though, that didn’t seem to change his raging vibe, so I wasn’t hopeful that anything else was going to change other than he’d be done wishing he could kill me. That was the minimum I was hoping for.

Liatskedand waggled a finger at him. “No, we’re not, but it’s cute you think you’re still in charge.”

It was more like sexy, but “cute” worked too.

“What if we—” I tried to say, but Grayson’s growl cut me off.

“You’re not taking her to Fire and Fluorite,” he spat. “She’s mine.”

My head reared back, not liking the possessive tone of his words. I might be attracted to him and curious as fuck about our bond, but nobody was going to control me now that I’d escaped the coven. Not even someone who was supposed to be my mate.

“Crazy demon wolf, come again?” I retorted. “I’myours? With just a few words spoken, I could change that unless you’re taking back your rejection.”

He glared. “We’re not discussing that right now.”

I reached for his black T-shirt and jerked him closer. “I think we are. If you’re going to use this bond as the reason you think I should do what you want, then you better have a lot more to fucking say. Like answering my previous question. Who sent you after me in the first place?”

His lips parted ever-so-slightly and I couldn’t stop myself from glancing at them. Damn it. I didn’t need to be wondering what it would feel like if they were pressed against my heated skin or if my toes would curl like I imagined they would when he touched me in places nobody ever had…

His hand covered mine over his chest and squeezed hard just before he stepped a few inches closer. His breath was warm on my cheeks as he looked down on me, but I stared defiantly back.

“I take back my rejection.” He grumbled the words that should have made my heart do a happy dance, but his tone…

“Maybe I don’t want you to take it back,” I quipped in return, raising a pointed brow.

His lips lifted just in one corner. The closest thing I’d seen to a smile from him yet. “Lying doesn’t suit you, Kinsley Ash.”

Then he released me and began walking back to the jeep.

That mother fucker.

I took a step forward to follow him, but Lia’s hand pressed against my shoulder, halting my forward momentum. “Take the loss, girl. You’ve got bigger battles to win.”

I shuddered, reality coming crashing down on me as I met her friendly eyes. “Who am I?”

“That’s what we’re going to figure out,” she said. “Just as soon as we get to Fire and Fluorite. In the meantime, maybe Grayson isn’t as bad as I thought he was. Let’s see if we can come up with a compromise, shall we?”

I just shrugged because I didn’t know what else to do.

I’d spent my life wishing for something more, and in one night, I’d gotten way more than I’d bargained for.
