Like a mate, a unicorn shifter, and a fuck-ton of questions I’d yet to get any answers to.

That was going to change just as soon as I got my libido and emotions back in check.

Chapter7

GRAYSON

Fuck. That word in its many variations was on repeat inside my head as I drove west. Either way, if we settled on Fire and Fluorite or No Man’s Land, that was the direction we needed to go. Given I’d already been up for nearly thirty-six hours, I was ready to stop, but I wanted to increase the distance between us and the coven I’d taken Kinsley from.

Based on what she’d said so far, I hadn’t thought anyone would be tempted to come after her, but knowing she wasn’t even a witch—that she was a wolf shifter—changed everything.

Changed my thoughts, my feelings, and what I thought we needed to do.

Someone had hidden her, and someone else had found her, which was where I’d come in, but why? Kinsley wanted to know who she was, and so did I.

She was sitting in the front seat next to me, and Lia was in the back, but the unicorn wasn’t exactly sitting. She leaned forward, keeping her head right between Kinsley and me.

“So, who wants to go first?” she asked calmly.

Kinsley twisted sideways, her white hair blowing around from the lack of top on the jeep. “First for what?”

“To tell their story,” Lia replied. “I’d volunteer, but I think the two of you have information that can fill in some of the gaps for me.”

Like hell was I going to participate in story time.

Kinsley, however, didn’t hesitate to begin rambling. Though I wasn’t surprised. I might not have always liked where I’d come from, but at least I knew what I was.

“As far as I know, I was left at that coven when I was only six months old,” Kinsley said. “My magic never came in, and, while nobody mistreated me growing up, I was often excluded from coven activities, which I guess makes more sense now. Nobody ever hinted that I might be something else. They just told me I was weak or broken and suggested that I just stay out of the way or that it was safest for me to remain where I was.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Lia’s hand reaching for Kinsley’s. “Itwassafest for you. I don’t know why, but I feel confident about that.”

Kinsley’s smile seemed forced, and the ire that built inside my chest on this woman’s behalf only added to my irritation.

She was supposed to be a mark. I wasn’t allowed to care about her. It shouldn’t have made a difference to me if she’d been deemed the pariah of her coven, left believing there was something wrong with her.

Yet I wanted to turn the jeep around and burn the whole damned place to the ground.

Fucking hell.

My hands tightened around the steering as my foot pressed harder on the accelerator. With the increased speed, wind whipped around the open interior loudly, making conversation hard, which I was more than okay with.

Lia, on the other hand, was not.

She lifted her hands up and a clear, yet metallic energy created a dome where the top should have been. The unicorn smiled triumphantly. “That’s better.”

Kinsley nodded as she attempted to tame her long, platinum strands. A few of them were stuck to her lips, and damn it if my hand didn’t flinch, wanting to remove them myself.

“Your turn, Grayson,” Lia said chipperly.

I ignored her. There was no way they were going to know about my past. That had nothing to do with what was going on here.

“You’re her mate,” Lia stated, as if she could read my mind and was countering my inner argument.

I glanced over my shoulder and glared at the dark-skinned unicorn. “So fucking what? I was also the man sent to capture or kill her.”

She leaned back in her seat and crossed her legs.

Fucking unicorn.
