Never mind that he was driving at high speeds down the highway or that my new friend was sitting just a couple of feet away.

All I could focus on was Grayson and how much I wanted to know what he tasted like.

His chest rumbled low and oh-so-sexily, but before I could explore what that meant, Lia had clearly had enough.

She grabbed each of our shoulders, and a chill raced through my body. “Something to cool the both of you off and to keep everyone awake until we get where we’re going.”

I sucked in a mouthful of fresh air and settled back into my seat. Yeah, maybe she was right.

Mate or not, this guy had just tried to kill me only hours ago.

I needed to think a bit more with my head and a lot less with my vagina.

Grayson’s lip lifted in a snarl. “I didn’t give you permission to touch me again.”

“And nobody gave you permission to be a dick, yet…” she quipped, making me snort.

Maybe all of this was going to be better than I had hoped for.

Too many hours later, we’d traveled through the slums of No Man’s Land. At one point, I’d been certain we were going to die. A pack of rogue wolves had started chasing us, but between Grayson and Lia showcasing only minute amounts of their power, the ragged-looking pack had quickly scampered back into the depths of the dying forests around us.

I’d been told we were almost to the circus where we’d have a place to regroup, but when Grayson started to pull over and I couldn’t see any buildings, I had a feeling that wasn’t exactly the case.

Grayson turned in his seat and glanced at Lia. “Can you help, or do I need to plan on killing the border watch team up ahead?”

My eyes widened. “I’m sorry. What?”

“No Man’s Land is split up over here,” Lia answered as she continued her staredown with Grayson. “To get to the circus, we have to travel through a smaller section of Earth and Emerald for a brief time.”

“And how are we going to do that without drawing attention?” I asked rapidly. “What if my coven has reported that I’m a runaway and they try to take me back? I won’t go back. Not fucking ever.”

I shivered in my seat at that thought. I wouldn’t be held captive, pretending I was something I never would be, again.

Lia reached for me, lightly gripping my shoulder. “I’m sorry, Kinsley. I didn’t think of that. I was just going to enchant the guards if we ran into them, but let’s not risk having more problems to deal with. I can use a portal since I’ve been by the circus once before. Though, I never did stay for the show. Too bad we won’t have time to visit.”

Grayson’s lips thinned, but he stayed silent, turning back to face the steering wheel as Lia stood up in her seat.

Her magic reminded me of a witch’s, but there was something more wild and free about the way her hands moved, and she hadn’t cast spells or used potions. Whatever this unicorn was capable of, it came from within, and it was fucking badass.

A bright, turquoise circle formed in front of the jeep, growing in size as Lia’s movements became faster. As the opening widened, an apartment building came into view with what looked like a large tent erected in the middle of the structures.

Grayson pulled forward, and I stared up, watching the bright-blue sparks flicker above us as we passed through the temporary portal opening.

“Who exactly is this friend of yours that we’re meeting?” I asked when the portal closed behind us. Something wasn’t sitting right with me when it came to not knowing exactly where we were any longer.

I also wasn’t sure if I was more surprised that Grayson had a friend or that there was acircusout here in this godforsaken territory.

“His name is D,” Grayson said gruffly when we parked in front of what appeared to be a construction site on the backside of the apartments. “And you don’t get to ask questions about him or what he does here. That’s his business, not ours. Do both of you understand?”

I nodded, but Lia didn’t agree as quickly. “Is he like you?”

Grayson’s eyes filled with flames. “Nobody is like me.”

“Right.” She rolled her eyes. “Let’s go, then. We have a wolf to resurrect.”

When I got out of the jeep, my knees buckled, and I had to hold myself up with the door. Apparently, sitting in the same seat for eighteen hours wasn’t good for one’s legs.
