Lia leapt from the back and wobbled, too. She shrugged sheepishly. “Opening a portal takes a lot of energy out of me, which is why I didn’t offer to do it before, but it’s fine now that I know I’ll get the chance to rest.” She glanced around and nodded toward where we could hear people and music. “Are we going to have privacy?”

Grayson nodded as he came around the front of the jeep. “When I texted D earlier, he assured me that we wouldn’t be bothered as long as we stayed in the construction section and used the forest area out back while the show was going.”

Great. Nobody would get to witness my body being torn to shreds and changing into a beast of an animal. That made this whole situation heaps better.

Once I got my legs to work right again, I followed Lia and Grayson. We passed by piles of drywall, lumber, and other random things I didn’t know the names for. Around the corner were a few finished sections. Grayson let himself into the one labeled “105” on the white door.

I stepped through the entryway and sighed at all the comforts here. There were what appeared to be a brand-new couch and a matching love seat in the living room. A metal coffee table sat between them that matched the stools I could see at the kitchen counter. To the right, there was a short hallway with three doors.

Considering that peeing on the side of the road wasn’t my favorite pastime, I continued forward without waiting for the tour I didn’t think was coming.

The first door was a bedroom with white walls and a mattress positioned at the center. The second was my saving grace. I locked the handle behind me and had my pants down in record time.

With a sigh, I peed and eyeballed the shower next to me. My skin was still itchy from the dirt and sweat I’d acquired in my initial fight with Grayson. A shower to wash away the shit night sounded like an excellent way to soothe some of my rough edges. Except my plans were swiftly interrupted.

A fist pounded on the door. “Hurry up.”

“Fuck off,” I muttered in return, not meaning for Grayson to hear, but…

He kicked in the door while I was still on the toilet. I bent forward to cover myself and sneered at him. “What the shit is your problem?”

“Don’t talk to me like that.” He growled.

I raised a brow at him. “Then get some fucking manners.”

His dark eyes stayed on my face the whole time, but even still, the sexual tension we’d experienced in the jeep came back with a vengeance. Though, it was easier to break this time, because there was very little that was sexy about sitting on a toilet with an irritated, hot-as-fuck dude watching.

“Care to back up a step or three and close the door so I can ‘hurry up’?” I asked with a flippant wave of my hand.

He snarled in answer, then slammed the door closed behind him. Though, it didn’t quite close like before. I heard him grumble something, then another door slammed loudly.

I finished up and washed my hands, sighing when I noticed the lock was officially busted and we’d only been here two minutes. Hopefully, this D guy was forgiving and wouldn’t kick us out thanks to Grayson’s anger issues.

When I got back to the living room, Lia was lounging across the love seat with her hands behind her head. “He went to get D. Told us to stay here.”

“Super,” I droned, more disappointed that I didn’t have time to take a shower and actually enjoy the hot water soothing my still-somewhat-sore muscles. “How long do you think we’re going to be here?”

She peeked over at me as I sat on the couch. “That depends on you.”

I hadn’t really asked much before about what it meant to be a wolf shifter. To be honest, I didn’t really care. At least, that was what I told myself.

I’d rather pretend there would be nothing grand about this revelation than be disappointed when I remained a broken supernatural.

Plus, it wasn’t like anything had really changed. I still didn’t have a home or a family. Hell, I didn’t even have a mate who wanted me.

What difference would knowing that I wasn’t a witch make?

“Do I need to do something to make my wolf appear?” I asked, at least pretending to be interested since Lia was frowning at me.

She sat up, crossing her legs underneath herself, and looked right at me, almost as if she could see into my soul. “You need to believe in yourself. To know that you are incredible just the way you are. Most importantly, you need to forget how anyone else has made you feel in the past, because they were idiots.”

I coughed and turned to look out the window for distraction, but there were curtains blocking my view. “Of course. That won’t be a problem.” The lie fell almost too easily from my lips.

She made an odd sound, but before I could ask another question, the door opened again. Grayson entered with a man behind him.

The man’s copper eyes remained locked on Lia, but not in the romantic sense. More out of curiosity assuming Grayson told him she was a unicorn.

She smirked at him. “I’m not looking for a new home, big guy.”
