“You can’t fault me for being intrigued,” he said, then he quickly glanced at me but seemed to be talking to Grayson. “This is her?”

“Yep.”

“I see.” His fingers rubbed lightly over the smattering of dark facial hair around his cheeks and chin.

My back went ramrod straight while I shoved all thoughts of self-pity back into their corner. “Youseewhat?”

I was allowed to talk shit about myself, but fuck anyone else thinking they could.

The two brooding men shared a look before D gave me his attention again. “I see that you’re not what anyone else thought. But you’ll be safe here to do whatever it is that you need. The rooms aren’t complete, as you may have seen already, but the kitchen should have anything you need.”

“We appreciate the privacy,” Lia said, staring hard at the broad-shouldered and rather attractive man.

His lip twitched upward but only slightly before falling again. “I have a business to run, and guards who don’t like when I ask them to stay behind. So, I need to get going, but Grayson knows how to find me if anything comes up. There is a forest just east of here, past the carnival area, that you can do whatever you need to in.”

Grayson nodded stiffly, then stepped out the front door with D following right behind.

Once it clicked closed, Lia sighed and fanned her cheeks. “Seriously. If I didn’t know there was something better out there for me…”

I cocked my head. “Are you holding out for your mate?”

“Gods, no.” She made a disgusted sound. “I just know he’s close by, and that fine specimen of man isn’t him.”

I blushed and nodded, then glanced down at my feet.

“Are you?” She gaped, moving to sit by me before I could look back up.

I shrugged. “Not intentionally. With the way I grew up, it wasn’t like people were dying to take me out.”

Lia held my hand, and her face turned dead serious. “A virgin? I so didn’t see that, but don’t worry. We’re going to get you laid.”

Grayson picked just that moment to walk back in the door, and I froze. His grip on the handle began to bend the metal, and the low growl rumbling from him turned my insides upside down.

Fuck. Why did I find his asshole-ness so damned attractive?

Stupid bond.

Yeah, I could totally blame this fiasco on the mate bond and not all the dirty novels the coven had hoarded away from when supernatural romance books had been considered fiction instead of fact.

“Bed. Now,” he demanded.

My face blanched. Though, warmth pooled between my legs. “Excuse me?”

“You need to sleep before trying to shift later tonight,” he muttered, clarifying his words that I’d taken in a very different way.

Holy hell. I’d thought he’d been… Well, we all knew what I’dthoughtand I wasn’t even mad about it.

“Of course,” I murmured. “I’ll get right on that.”

Right after I took care of my own business, because there was no way I was sleeping without a bit of relief.

Relief that I knew Grayson wasn’t going to provide me and that he probably wouldn’t allow anyone else to, either.

Lia waggled her fingers at me as I got up. “Happy sleeping.”

I shot her a glare over my shoulder, then went into the bedroom farthest from the living room.

Then I snorted because the additional space between me and that demon wolf wasn’t going to make a bit of fucking difference.
