Kinsley might not understand how things worked in this new world, considering she’d never left the coven, but she was about to get an abrupt awakening.

Once I heard Lia return, I finally came out of the bedroom with the rest of my clothes on. “It’s time to see if Kinsley can shift,” I said, trying yet failing to keep the gruffness out of my voice.

Lia narrowed bright eyes at me. “Clearly. So she can kick your ass.”

Kinsley smirked. “I already did that once, but I wouldn’t mind doing it again with claws.”

I was tempted to dispute that statement, considering I’d ended up kidnapping her, but Kinsley could have this win.

“Right,” I said. “Let’s go, then.”

My eyes were forced forward so as not to stare too closely at Kinsley’s still-flushed cheeks and chest. I made it out the door without making eye contact and headed toward the forest, giving the carnival area a wide berth to avoid the people milling about.

I saw Kinsley point at some of the rides and signs, but we weren’t here to have fun. We were here to see if she was going to have a problem shifting, and then it was time for us to move on. That was it.

When all three of us made it into the small forest, I led the way to a spot past some of the denser trees that would allow us some privacy but still would offer plenty of moonlight.

We didn’t need the moon to shift into our wolf forms, but that didn’t mean its rays didn’t give us more strength when we needed it.

When I stopped, Kinsley surprised me by standing within a few feet of me. “How do I do this?”

I glanced at Lia, expecting her to have some input since she was a shifter as well, but the unicorn stayed quiet.

“You need to relax your body and mind,” I said. “Picture your inner animal and focus on the feeling within you that wasn’t there before. That’s your wolf.”

Her lashes fluttered closed, and she took a deep inhale. My eyes flicked down to her chest as her tits rose briefly.

I was so fucked.

Kinsley reopened her eyes, a frown deepening on her face. “I don’t feel anything right now like I did before. There had been heaviness in my chest after Lia did whatever she did. That’s gone now.”

“Maybe you shouldn’t have gone in the bedroom,” Lia snickered.

I cut her a sharp glare. “If you’re not going to help, then you can leave.”

She shrugged, then did just that.

So much for the two of them becoming fast friends.

So much for me not being alone with Kinsley again.

So fucking much.

Kinsley watched Lia walk further into the forest with just as much shock as I felt.

“It’s okay,” I promised. “We’ll figure this out. You just need to relax more.”

She sneered. “Then maybe you shouldn’t be such a prick.”

Ignoring the snide comment, I grabbed her shoulders and spun her around until she was facing away from me. “Close your eyes again.”

“Ask me instead of ordering me to,” she quickly countered.

She had to be fucking kidding me with the need for pleasantries. I ignored her again.

Kinsley broke free of the hold I had on her shoulders and turned back around. “You might not have expected a mate or this shitshow when you came to kill me, but I didn’t fucking ask for any of this, either. I didn’t ask to be kept hidden and lied to my whole life. I certainly didn’t wish for some giant asshole to show up and reject me at first sight. So, maybe if you showed me a modicum of respect, this might be easier.”

There was plenty of truth in her words. All of it I was already well aware of, but keeping her at a distance seemed easier.
