Maybe I was wrong. Again.

I didn’t like that. Not one fucking bit.

I stared straight into her eyes, trying and failing to hate the connection I felt as I did. “I’ll try harder not to piss you off.”

A heavy sigh escaped from between her lips. “You’re… Never mind. Let’s just figure this out.”

With more gentleness than before, I moved Kinsley again until her back was to me. My hands cupped her shoulders, and I leaned forward. “You need to clear your mind and relax.”

She shuddered all the way from where I held her to her feet. “Not fucking likely right now.”

Instead of backing away like I should have, I pressed forward. If things were as fucked as they seemed, Kinsley needed to know how to shift under duress. Babying her wasn’t going to help.

Though, what I had in mind had nothing to do with realduress.

My front pressed against her back, and her ass fit snuggly against me, right below my dick. Her breathing sputtered, and I lowered my head until my mouth was next to her ear.

“You have to know your body,” I whispered. “You need to be able to command it to do what you want, no matter what’s happening around you. That’s the only way you’re going to control your shift and subsequently, your wolf.”

Kinsley’s head tilted to the side, exposing her neck to me. I hardened behind her, appreciating that while she had a mouth on her and was expectedly still furious with me, her instinct was to still be submissive. At least with me.

“Good girl,” I murmured, moving my hand slowly down her arms until they cupped her elbows. “Now, breathe deeply and call your wolf.”

She did as I’d asked, and energy sizzled along her skin, reminding me to back away before she actually did hurt me.

Except when I moved, she stiffened and gasped before turning to face me. “What was that?”

“Your shifter energy,” I answered, still staying back.

She rubbed her palms over her arms. “I’ve never felt magic like that.”

The innocence she exuded was too fucking sexy for her own good.

“We’re going to fix that,” I said, trying to ignore the irritation I felt over the fact that the coven hadn’t prepared her for life outside of their House, regardless of whether or not they’d hoped to keep her locked up.

Kinsley nodded and closed her eyes again. This time, I had a front-row view of the process, and it wasn’t just shifter energy that crackled over her lightly bronzed skin.

There was something else there that didn’t belong.

White magic softly pulsed over her arms and hands, so faint that I almost couldn’t see it. Then she bent forward and let out an impressive roar that had me backing up further.

I could hear the breaking of her bones as they reshaped into her wolf, but besides the initial shout, she stayed quiet. Considering it was her first shift, I was more than impressed.

When her wolf appeared, she was around four-and-a-half feet tall—larger than most females—and a dark charcoal color.

The faint white I’d seen before seemed to flicker around her, but then it fizzled out. I didn’t know what that meant, but the fact that she could shift on her first try was what I focused on.

Until I had the sudden desire to bow before her.

What the fuck?I thought.

I kept her wolf’s gaze and stepped forward with my hand out.

She eyed me suspiciously, not nearly as submissive as her human half. A low growl rumbled from her chest, and I paused my movements.

“Kinsley,” I warned.

If she couldn’t keep control of her wolf, we were going to have an even bigger problem on our hands. I hadn’t considered the ramifications of forcing her first shift when she didn’t have an alpha, but as the minutes ticked by, the beast settled.
