He held up his wrist to show me a thin, tan, braided bracelet around his left wrist that held a deep purple stone about the size of my pinky nail.

I pointed to it. “An amulet stone? I remember seeing witches prepare those around the coven for different things, but nobody ever told me where they went once they were made.”

Grayson took a step closer to me. “They were likely used for trades. That’s how I got one and how we’ll get you another.” His hand raised as if he were going to stroke my arm, but then lowered it back to his side. “How was shifting and running as your wolf for the first time?”

“Magnificent,” I said with a grin. “I felt like I could bust through a wall.”

Grayson’s lips thinned, and his eyes pinched at the sides.

“What?” I asked, a sliver of rage rising within me that I wasn’t used to.

He shook his head. “Nothing. This is just different for me.”

“Different how?” I brushed the back of my hand over his chest, but he captured my wrist.

“Just different.” His voice was distant, but not cold like it had been before.

I smirked. “Right. So, what now?”

A branch snapped behind us and I turned to see Lia’s unicorn waltzing forward before she changed back to her human form.

“All done?” she asked while taming her indigo hair with her hands.

I glanced back at Grayson, who nodded. “We can stay here for the rest of the night and then drive to Fire and Fluorite in the morning. Unless you know something else that you haven’t shared yet.”

Lia glanced between the two of us and frowned. “No, nothing else. Fire and Fluorite is still where we need to be. We should leave before sunrise, though.”

“Why?” I asked.

Her shoulders shrugged. “Just a suggestion.” Then, she turned and started heading back toward the apartments.

Lia had been distant all evening. I’d thought that maybe she was going to be different than the others I’d tried to befriend growing up, but maybe I was destined not to have any friends. It was a shitty thing to realize, but I wasn’t a fan of pretending things weren’t what they were.

Grayson’s hand gripped my forearm when I took a step forward. “Are you okay?”

What? Was he really asking me that?

“Of course.” I forced my mouth into a smile. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

He didn’t answer. Instead, we went back to the apartment silently, entering to find Lia already on the couch with her eyes closed. With a sigh, I headed toward the room I’d already slept in and watched Grayson enter the other without uttering another word to me.

Well, fuck.

Lia’s singing from the other room woke me while it was still dark out. Not because she sounded offkey, but because she was so damn good.

I tried to enjoy the softly sung words that were sending shivers down my spine, but then my skin began to itch and the need to move overwhelmed me.

I was out of bed in the next second and opening my bedroom door without really thinking things through. Moving down the hallway, I found Lia in the living room. She was already dressed in leather pants that melded to her skin but looked soft and pliable. She had on a white tank top, and her midnight hair was pulled back into a ponytail.

Basically, she looked like a badass biker chick. I was in awe.

She turned her smile on me, acting friendlier than she had the day before. “How’d you sleep?”

“Not as well as usual, but good enough for the few hours I got,” I answered, scratching at my skin.

Her eyes watched my movements. “Shifter jitters. I forgot about those. They’ll go away eventually.”
