Though, I would have to ask Lia about what to expect from a heat. I was pretty sure witches didn’t go through something like that since I’d never heard of it. I wanted to have an idea of what to expect.

“I’m sure we’ll manage to get our shit together by then,” I finally said with a wink, hoping to lighten the mood.

Grayson nodded, then reached toward me and lightly pressed his palm over my chest. “Not to change the subject, but the power inside you is distracting at times.” His eyes squinted at the sides. “Are you sure you don’t know any details about your parents?”

I chuckled. “You know, it’s not great for a woman’s confidence when you bring up her life-givers while we’re supposed to be having a conversation about sex.”

His face remained unemotional. “Well, then maybe you should stop pulsing with power and I wouldn’t bring them up.”

“Power?” I tilted my head. “I’m not a witch, though.” At least that was what I had thought I understood before.

“Witches aren’t the only ones with power,” Grayson answered. “Every supernatural has some form of it. Especially ones who rank higher on the food chain. You have a strong wolf inside you and that had to come from someone. Like an alpha people would think twice about fucking with.”

My chest tightened and stomach churned. It was easy to pretend my past didn’t exist—that I hadn’t been abandoned as a child—but when something so specific was pointed out, there was no ignoring that fact.

“How do you know?” I asked cautiously.

Instead of answering, Grayson leaned closer and our eyes locked. A strength rose up inside of me, and I felt the need to sit up taller.

“That right there,” he said without breaking eye contact.

I wanted to blink, but something inside me wouldn’t let me.

“What is this?” I wasn’t sure if I liked the dominant feeling that was growing inside me or not.

Grayson gave nothing away as he replied, “Alpha power.”

“And that would mean…” I was pretty sure I could guess, but I really didn’t want to.

He finally broke our stare, the action causing my shoulders to drop. “It means that your father or mother was an alpha. Knowing that and seeing what I have since deciding not to kill you, I think I—”

“Don’t be naked, please!” Lia’s voice called from the front door. “I’m back with a guest.”

Grayson was on his feet before she’d finished speaking, and he moved to stand in front of me.

Sweet, but not necessary. Lia wouldn’t have brought anyone she didn’t trust into the house.

Well, as long as she’d had a choice.

Okay, maybe Grayson had every reason to be overly cautious.

“Come on out here when you’re ready,” Lia said chipperly, and I stood up.

Grayson glanced back at me, and I remembered he’d been mid-sentence, saying something that sounded like it had been about to change what I knew about myself.

“What were you saying?” I asked, standing in front of him and running a hand over my long, white strands so I didn’t look a mess when we went out to see Lia and her “guest.”

He shook his head. “We’ll finish that conversation later.”

I was tempted to argue with him, but I was equally curious about what was waiting for us outside the bedroom, so I let the conversation drop.

When I moved to head down the hallway first, Grayson grabbed my arm. “I’m going first.”

An objection to his macho statement sat at the tip of my tongue, but I managed to keep the words to myself. We’d just had our first conversation without fighting. I didn’t want to be the reason it ended in one.

He went ahead, and I followed close behind for the maybe twenty feet it took to get to the living room.

My eyes widened when I spotted Lia, who was sitting in the lap of a man I’d yet to meet. Her arm was draped over his shoulder, and her other hand was drawing circles over his chest with her finger.
