This was my favorite part of the day, because we never talked about training or anything to do with the shit going on around us. Lia had made that rule the first time she’d cooked, and I’d easily agreed to it.

Instead, we asked a mix of stupid questions and interesting ones, and everyone had to answer.

Well, everyone was supposed to. Some things Grayson wouldn’t acknowledge, like if he preferred the toilet paper roll to be put on the holder one way or the other, stating “stupid questions don’t deserve responses.”

“So…” Lia started first. “I was thinking: If you could teleport anywhere to either live or just visit, where would you go?”

Markus quickly chewed the bite he’d already shoved into his mouth. “That’s easy. Arcadia.”

I cocked my head to the side. “Where is that?”

Every face at the table stared incredulously at me.

“Seriously?” Markus asked.

I nodded and frowned. “Is that another House I don’t know about?”

This time, it was Grayson who answered. “It’s the shifter realm. A place that has been closed off to this world for over two decades.”

“Why?” I’d never heard of a portal being closed, but there had certainly been talks of ones being opened and even created, especially recently.

Grayson poked at his food. “Nobody knows, and those who try to find out don’t ever come back.”

Interesting, but also not our problem. Hopefully not.

I glanced at Markus. “Is that why you want to go there? Because nobody knows why it was closed?”

“Not really,” he answered. “I’d just like to know where my family originated from. Plus, I’ve yet to go to another realm. Really any of them would be interesting to visit.”

I doubted that. I’d heard some hellish stories about the other realms and the conflicts within them. At least according to some of the gossiping witches. I was good staying right where I was.

Lia smiled widely. “I’d want to go back in time. To the world pre-supernaturals. Maybe back in the 1800s without technology.”

I shuddered at that thought. “You’re insane.”

“Tell me something I don’t already know.” Her chuckle had my smile growing, then she nodded at me. “What about you?”

“Uhhh.” I paused. “I never thought I’d leave Earth and Emerald, so I don’t really know.”

“What’s the first thing that comes to mind, even if it makes absolutely no sense?” Markus asked.

“Home.” The word left my lips so quickly that I didn’t even realize I’d said it until Lia frowned at me and Grayson cracked his knuckles under the table.

Markus reached across the table and squeezed my forearm. “You’ll get there one day. Sooner than you think, hopefully.”

Yeah, I hoped he was right, and even though we weren’t supposed to talk about the shit happening around us, the thought of fighting one of the factions soon hadn’t left my mind, even while eating the delicious meal.

I might not ever have a home if I couldn’t win these fights.

That thought was nearly paralyzing when I considered it too deeply.

“I’d want to go to the islands west of here. I think they were called ‘Hawaii’ before,” Grayson said, shocking the hell out of myself and probably the others that he’d answered without prodding from one of us.

I cocked my head to the side. “Why?”

He shrugged, closing off just as quickly as he’d opened up. “Why not?”

Though he wasn’t wrong.
