Sometimes we didn’t need a reason to do the things we did. We just did them because they felt right, and that was enough.

At least it was for me, especially when it came to Grayson or anything to do with Fire and Fluorite.

Chapter21

KINSLEY

My head thudded against the hard ground for the umpteenth time that morning. Grayson stood over me and glowered. “Again.”

“Fuck you,” was at the tip of my tongue, but I knew he was pushing me for good reason and a part of me—a very fucking small part at the moment—appreciated that he wasn’t treating me like a fragile woman.

I was supposed to be fighting a group of wolves in preparation for challenging the North faction leader named Dylan, but apparently, he’d disappeared. None of Ryder’s wolves could find him, which had disappointed me more than I’d expected it to.

I was never too sad about private trainings with Grayson, though.

After pushing myself up from the ground that was covered in dying grass, I dusted myself off as well as I could. When I’d taken a deep breath, I held my hands up, ready for him to charge at me again.

Except this time, he didn’t.

Instead, Grayson snapped his fingers, and a ball of flames came racing toward my head.

Every muscle in my body might have been screaming at me, but the idea of getting my face burned off sent a wave of adrenaline pulsing through me.

I was on the ground in less than a half second with one leg out straight behind me, the other bent at the knee and my hands keeping me in place while my forehead nearly touched the dirt.

Instinct kicked in, and instead of asking him what kind of fuckery that was, I launched myself up and managed to quickly close the distance between Grayson and me.

My fist met the underside of his chin and sent him back a few feet. Energy raced through me, and I didn’t deny my wolf what she wanted.

I shifted into my more powerful form, my paws coming within inches of Grayson when I finished out on all fours.

My wolf stalked forward, the air crackling around our form and sending shivers down our spine.

She bared her teeth and took a swipe at the mate she hadn’t quite accepted.

Grayson was swift on his feet and was out of the way before any claws could cut him, but my wolf was prepared for that. I was curious as to her intentions, so I sat back, letting her take charge.

She leapt forward, ramming her head into his side, and he stumbled toward the ground, only managing to stay up on his feet because he was so close to a rock he used as leverage.

“Kinsley,” he said with a warning growl.

My wolf bared her teeth and continued forward.

The wave of hype flowing through the animalistic part of me had my focus changing from curiosity to skillful intent.

Grayson needed to go down.

He must have seen the determination in our eyes, because he shifted in the next second and his wolf tried circling us, but there was no backing down for my beast.

She shadowed his movements, keeping the distance even until we were ready to strike, but that moment didn’t come for several beats.

Grayson’s silver wolf lowered his head, a tell I’d learned over the last week meant he was preparing for something. Though it was usually something different each time he attacked, I at least knew to be prepared to move.

When he feigned right, then leapt left, I thought my wolf would dart out of the way. Instead, she rolled to the ground, lying on her side, then lightly clawed the underbelly of Grayson’s beast.

The ferocious snarl that left his wolf gave me pause.

Shit.Had we really hurt him?
