Once we were back up on our feet, I noticed Grayson was covered in green flames, but the freaky demon energy didn’t deter my wolf.

She charged forward, going for a direct hit. Our head slammed right into his chest, and while the flames coming from him were hot, they weren’t overwhelmingly so.

Even still, it must have scared the hell out of Grayson, because he was shifting back to two feet faster than I’d yet to see.

His hands were on my wolf, patting her back and chest while he scanned every inch of us with his eyes.

“Are you okay?” he demanded.

I nodded my wolf head and he let out a strangled breath. “Fucking hell, Kinsley. You can’t do that. Those flames are derived from dark magic straight from Soleil. Your wolf… You could have been turned to ash.”

I wasn’t sure what he was panicking about, because nothing had happened, but still, I stepped away from him and transformed back to two legs so that we could have a proper conversation.

My fingers brushed over the necklace that Lia had given me, grateful I didn’t have to be naked every time I changed forms, then my attention fully focused back to Grayson.

“What are you talking about?” I asked. “Your flames didn’t hurt at all.”

He cocked his head to the side and furrowed his brow while his hands moved lightly over my arms, inspecting every inch of skin that was visible.

“How?” His voice was filled with equal parts awe and confusion.

I shrugged and waited for him to look back up at my face. “Maybe it’s the bond.”

His nod seemed almost absentminded. “Maybe.” He stiffened and positioned himself in front of me, but the instinct to protect wasn’t necessary.

It was only Lia and Markus joining us.

They were holding hands while they walked across the park, coming toward us. Markus had a folder in his grasp, and his eyes—so similar to mine—sparked with a happiness I’d never known, but I thought maybe I could with my grumpy demon wolf.

“What’s going on?” I asked them when I moved around Grayson.

Markus answered first. “I finally got my mom to give up the passwords for my dad’s personal computers.”

The house where the last acting Alpha Supreme had been staying had been destroyed, and the only access to House records had been on Mathis’s private devices, but getting into them had been difficult. I wasn’t sure Markus would be able to do it after the first couple of failed attempts, but I couldn’t deny I was eager to know what he’d learned.

“Did you find Johnathon?” Grayson asked first.

Markus handed him the file. “I foundaJohnathon who meets the profile of someone who would want vengeance on Fire and Fluorite, but I can’t be positive yet that he’s the one you’re looking for. This guy is a mangy, older wolf shifter who was banished by Mathis about two years ago. From what I read in there, this Johnathon was trying to gather a group of people to overthrow Mathis, but nobody joined him. They instead told my father and Johnathon managed to escape before he was killed.”

Just because this guy had been unsuccessful the first time didn’t mean this wasn’t our Johnathon. He could have learned from his failure and found new friends in No Man’s Land.

Grayson flipped open the folder, and I pressed up onto my tiptoes to peek at the pages as well. There was a fuzzy black-and-white photo of a man who appeared to be in his forties but could be much older thanks to magical genes.

He had dark hair but bright eyes that seemed almost silver, and there was a deep scar on the right side of his forehead.

Grayson glanced up, something feral in his voice as he spoke. “Do you think he’s still in No Man’s Land?”

“I’m up for heading there to find out,” Markus replied with a bit of glee in his voice. I hadn’t heard that emotion from him before and was curious about it. Was he excited to be fighting for this House or just fighting in general?

I glanced at Lia, and she was frowning, which was very unusual for her.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

She shifted her feet and met my worried stare. “I’ve never not been able to help once I was this involved in a situation. Yet I haven’t sensed anything on this Johnathon guy.”

Markus wrapped an arm around her shoulders, but before he could say something to console her, I spoke. “What if he doesn’t exist?”

All three sets of eyes swiveled toward me. “What do you mean?” Grayson asked first.
