She closed her eyes again. This time, instead of her body trembling, Kinsley took several deep inhales and lowered her head.

I waited patiently in front of her, staying on my knees and keeping my hands to myself so as to not break her concentration.

Finally, the magic around her charcoal fur began to fade. With each subsequent breath that Kinsley took, the power lessened until she looked just like she had before.

Her eyes reopened, and her head twisted to glance back at her body while I spoke proudly and stood back up. “You did it.”

I took a better look at her, and now that I wasn’t so distracted by the new energy, I noticed her wolf was several inches bigger than before. Possibly even the same size as mine.

“Want to go for a run?” I asked, curious to know if she was faster as well.

She nodded and turned toward the city blocks. There wasn’t a lot of room for our wolves to run here without going beyond Ryder’s territory, but there were enough streets to circle a few times before we’d get bored.

I shifted into my wolf, who immediately nudged Kinsley’s, nipping at her neck and nudging her around. They played together like that for several moments before Kinsley’s wolf straightened and yipped.

I took that to mean it was time to run, which I was more than ready for.

“Don’t worry about us,” Lia said flatly. “We’ll be right here, just waiting on the two of you.”

We ignored her unspoken complaint and took off. Well, Kinsley did.

She was a blur of dark fur and crackling energy as she raced ahead of me. It took more effort than I’d anticipated to keep up with her, but even as she jumped over dumpsters, dodged cars, and avoided fences, I stayed right on her tail.

Though I was breathing hard, she seemed to barely be getting started.

We did a few laps that covered about a dozen blocks each before we stopped back at the park. This time when we arrived, there were more people around, including Ryder, Sammy, Tuck, and several of their men.

Kinsley shifted back first, and when she shook out her hair and arms, the men with Ryder bowed their heads to her, murmuring, “Alpha Supreme.”

Not only did that seem to shock the hell out of Kinsley, but I was also taken aback. I’d known Ryder was supporting Kinsley, but given the amount of times that we’d all disagreed, I wasn’t sure what information he was passing along to his people.

This showed us—well, at least me—that maybe I’d been too hard on him, regardless of the surprises he’d thrown our way.

Kinsley stood tall, and I adjusted my stance so that I could stand by her side. She took my hand in hers as she gracefully accepted the show of respect from these wolves.

“Thank you,” she said quietly, then she turned to Ryder. “Did you see my wolf?”

He nodded and gestured to the group in front of us. “We all did.”

“We’d like some privacy to train for the rest of the afternoon,” she said. “Only because this is new and I’d rather nobody get hurt in case there are any other new developments with my wolf.”

“Understandable,” Ryder said, and then the other wolves began to disperse. “Use the building behind us. I’ll make sure it remains empty until you’re done.”

“You’re welcome to join us if you’d like,” I said to Ryder, hiding my smirk when I noticed how wide his eyes had become.

He glanced down at Sammy, who was still staring at Kinsley with his mouth open. “I promised my son that we would spend today together since I’ll be gone tonight. You four enjoy.”

Sammy tugged on his dad’s pant leg. “Can we watch them?”

Kinsley lowered herself to the boy’s level. “How about I call your dad when we have something exciting to show you, and then you can join us?”

He grinned widely. “That would be super cool.”

Kinsley held out a fist to the boy. “Then, I’ll make sure it happens.”

Ryder took his son and headed in the direction I knew their apartments to be, then I gave Kinsley my full attention. “How did that feel?”

“Empowering,” she replied quickly with a spark in her eyes. “I felt like I was home for the first time ever. The way the land called to me, and having you there with me… It was like all my wishes had come true. I know that’s cheesy, but I don’t know how else to describe it. Then, when they called me ‘Alpha Supreme’?” She sighed, her eyes bright, but there was also a frown forming on her face. “I don’t know what I’ll do if things don’t go like we hope.”
