I pulled her into my arms and held her tightly against me. “You’re going to have that position. I won’t stop fighting until you do.”

“None of us will,” Markus said as I released my mate. “My father raised me to take the position one day, but my heart never truly wanted it. I only wanted to please a man who didn’t deserve the respect I gave him. But you? You were born for this without needing any conditioning.”

Kinsley’s eyes glazed over, and she leaned her head on my shoulder. “Thank you. Thank you all.”

I nudged her lightly. “Let’s see if you’re still saying that in a few hours.”

Even the reminder that we were about to push her and her wolf to their limits didn’t diminish the natural glow about my mate.

“Give me your best,” she taunted me with a sly grin.

Lia snorted. “Pretty sure he gave you plenty already.”

“I’m beginning to see that’s not possible,” Kinsley replied without missing a beat. She pulled me toward the warehouse we’d be training in, seeming more eager than ever to get started.

I didn’t presume that meant anything good for the rest of us.

Chapter29

KINSLEY

The euphoric rush that was still swirling inside me was unreal. I still wasn’t even sure if I was awake or dreaming, but when we got into the warehouse to start training, I had no doubts about anything anymore. Even if I didn’t win against Dylan, the third faction leader, this was where I belonged.

I knew it with every fiber of my being.

Though, that was only until Lia blasted me with icy energy then shifted into her unicorn form. Her horn, which was nearly two feet in length, glinted under the lights inside the building, and she dragged her hoof over the concrete ground before charging me.

I jumped over her, shifting as I did, then swiped behind me with my paw, minus the claws, as soon as I landed on four feet.

All I caught was her tail, but even that quickly disappeared when she swiftly swung her ass around and turned to face me again.

“If you stab my mate with that horn, not even Markus will be able to stop the wrath I’ll unleash on you,” Grayson warned from where he and Markus were waiting near the door.

Markus jabbed him and said something that I didn’t catch, because Lia was coming for me again.

This time while in my wolf form, I could easily identify the new power inside me. I hoped that I’d get to the point where I could shift and already have the energy contained, but as long as I could control the magic, I didn’t much care about hiding it.

The glow around me increased when I focused on the pulsing sensation at my core, something I’d always wished for while living in the coven. I’d hated being different and weaker than everyone else.

If I’d only known that was the furthest thing from the truth…

Lia’s horn came dangerously close to my throat, and I let out a warning growl, to which she responded with her own saucy whinny.

That bitch. She was totally trying to stab me.

I still loved her, but things were about to get aggressive.

Instead of leaving my claws retracted, I extended them, then ran for the wall behind us and used it as leverage.

My paws pushed off the drywall there, leaving cracks in their wake, and I leapt over Lia until I could grab her around her long neck.

The attempt at taking her down didn’t go quite as I planned, but she also couldn’t stab me if I was on her back.

My wolf scrambled to stay where I was when she didn’t fall to the ground as I hoped, but the damn unicorn began to buck, and we had to jump off, barely escaping the hoof that tried to stomp our head.

My only friend was trying to kill me.

So not cool.
