He nodded stiffly. “Whatever you need, Mate.”

His support was something I wouldn’t take for granted, and it also fueled my confidence. If he wasn’t trying to convince me to back down, then I knew he believed in me as well. Something I hadn’t realized I’d needed until that moment.

We both transformed into our wolves, and I ignored the gasps while people I hadn’t noticed gathering stood and pointed at my glowing wolf.

“What is she?”

“Maybe she really is meant to be the Alpha Supreme.”

“She’s not a true wolf. A hybrid should never be allowed to rule over our land.”

Varying tones and inflections were spoken by each House member who had circled around us, but I ignored them with Grayson at my side. We followed after Dylan, who had headed back down the alley.

The group of curious shifters followed us, including Lia, Markus, and Ryder, who stayed ahead of everyone else. We went another four blocks before we saw Dylan stopped at a smaller park than the one that I was used to in Ryder’s faction.

Dylan was still in wolf form, so I stayed the same. Grayson’s wolf pressed his head against mine, and a charge rolled through me.

Our bond, I thought.

Grayson definitely played a part in increasing my strength.

A menacing growl echoed behind us, then I heard Dylan’s voice, surprised he’d wasted energy changing again so soon. “No magic during this fight. You didn’t say you were a hybrid.”

Grayson shifted before my opponent had even finished speaking, and I gladly let my mate have this moment.

He stalked toward Dylan, his rage palpable. “If you’re as strong of a wolf as you say, then look at her,” Grayson pointed at me, “and confidently tell me she’s anything other than pure wolf.”

Dylan’s hardened stare narrowed at me, and his chest rumbled. “What is that magic, then?”

“Something yourresearchclearly didn’t tell you about,” Grayson snarled.

Dylan shook his shoulders and arms out while bouncing on his feet. “Whatever. It doesn’t change anything. I’m still going to kill your mate.”

The menacing smile that appeared on Grayson’s sculpted face made even me shiver. “Right.” He backed up, kneeled before me, and kissed the top of my wolf’s head. “Rip his fucking throat out.”

His words were a mere whisper, but they echoed loudly through my mind as he walked away.

I would if I had to.

While Grayson rejoined our small group, other members of Fire and Fluorite circled around us. This was exactly what we needed. It wasn’t just the faction leaders who needed to know I wasn’t backing down, but more importantly, it was the members of the House that needed to know I deserved the title I was seeking.

My wolf moved forward, and I readied myself mentally for the fight, but Dylan didn’t give me much time for that.

He shifted back to his wolf and hadn’t even let his front paws touch the dying grass before he swiped at me. His claws caught my tail, but no blood was drawn and nothing about the energy pulsing from me hurt him.

Just like it hadn’t for Lia, Grayson, or Markus when we’d been practicing earlier.

I had surmised that was because, just as Grayson had said, I was a pure wolf. The extra power I had didn’t give me special abilities, but it did enhance what I’d already worked hard to hone.

Dylan leapt for me again, but by the time he landed, I was already two feet away. He snarled, snapping his jaw.

I wasn’t afraid of him. I countered his move. Instead of trying to keep a distance, I rammed my head into his side, sending us both tumbling a good ten feet.

The gathered crowd parted for our wolves while we clawed and tried to bite each other. There wasn’t a moment of reprieve once I was on him. I ripped fur from his front flank as his claws shredded my right side, drawing the first blood.

My accelerated healing was already kicking in, attempting to staunch the blood, but that didn’t mean the wound burned any less.

I focused on the adrenaline instead of the pain, then slammed my head against his jaw.
