“I’m so sorry,” she murmured into my neck. “I didn’t have another choice.”

Did she think I was mad about the bond breaking? I fucking hoped not.

“You have nothing to apologize for.” I pushed her back until I could see her face again. “You’re mine, Dawsyn. Bond or not, I’d never give up on you.”

“Fuck,” she hissed, then grabbed both of my cheeks and pressed her lips to mine.

I was tempted to devour her, but she was fragile and needed this control, so I let her have it.

She kissed me slowly at first, but never loosened her hold on my face or around my waist. I kept one hand on her neck and the other over her ass, pushing her closer to me.

Her tongue urged forward, and I opened for her, moaning into the kiss, needing her more than I ever had before.

Her hands moved to the back of my head, digging her nails into my skin. The bite of pain was welcome until she tensed within my hold.

“What’s wrong?” I asked softly.

“Someone’s coming.” The fear that emanated from the two words was like a knife to my chest.

I listened and sensed for what she already had and realized it was just Lykem.

“It’s okay,” I said. “He’s friendly, but we should still go.”

She clung tighter to me. “Go where?”

“For the moment, to the caves where the rest of the dragons are staying. Then, we’ll get you back to Earth.”

The tension in her shoulder loosened some, and she nodded. “Okay.”

“How do you feel about riding a dragon?” I asked, trying and failing to hide my grin.

Her eyes finally sparked the way they had when I first met her. “Depends on the situation.”

She might have been scared, but my mate was still strong.

I grabbed her hand and led her out of the forest. “Come on. We need to know if there’s anything else to worry about right now.”

The grimace on her face didn’t make me feel better. “There’s a lot we need to talk about.”

“We’ll get to that,” I said. “Soon.”

My thoughts got away from me, wondering about what could have happened to her, given she was forced to become someone else’s mate…

I’d done my best not to let my thoughts go to those dark places. Instead, I’d focused on how capable I knew Dawsyn was and known that she’d fight to keep herself safe.

Except, seeing her now, shaken to the core, I couldn’t help but wonder if she’d been worse off than I’d let myself believe.

That caused rage to swirl deep inside my chest, expanding through the rest of my body, but this wasn’t about me. It was about my mate. I had to keep my thoughts focused on Dawsyn and be thankful she was back with me.

I could plot murder as soon as I had her safely away from this fucking forest that had hidden her from me.

ChapterTen

DAWSYN

I’d thought I was okay. Thought I’d come out of that whole situation like a badass with no issues, but the moment I realized I wasn’t just an ordinary alpha wolf and then thought I was running for my life again from an attacking dragon, I’d lost it.

When I realized that it was Cillian following me and not Knox, I’d calmed considerably, but only for a moment. Once the true loss of the connection was right there in front of us, I couldn’t ignore the sorrow that consumed my wolf.
