She’d been mated to his dragon before. She knew his soul and yearned for the comfort that could only come from our bond. Yet, she’d never even had the chance to properly have it.

Knox had stolen that from us. Before we returned to a vengeful mindset, both my wolf and I gave into the grief of what was lost. We gave into the warmth that Cillian was offering and wept.

After being locked away, after not really knowing if I’d get out of that underground bunker unscathed… Having our true mate hold us was everything.

His touch healed the parts of me that I’d shoved down while we’d been in that cell. The parts I couldn’t risk coming to the surface without losing all of my will to fight.

As he held my hand and guided me out of the forest, the tension in my body began to slowly release. I forced myself to breathe deeply and remember that I was okay.

Different than before, but okay.

The glow around me was a problem for later, though. Cillian needed to know what I’d learned.

Before we could get to that, my eyes landed on a ginormous red dragon. A deep rich color that had shinier scales which reflected the dull sun above. Seeing this one made me wish that we’d slowed enough earlier to get a better look at Cillian’s beast.

We’ll get that time later, my wolf said, and I agreed. We had time now that we weren’t certain we’d have before.

The dragon in front of us was ten-or-so feet tall before he began to shrink down. Within a few seconds, a man stood in his place with a wide smile on his face. His skin glowed with a light tan, making his short reddish-blond hair stand out.

He winked at me with his blue eyes, and he reached a hand toward me. “You must be Dawsyn. I’m Lykem.”

“Like-em?” I pronounced the name slower, making sure I didn’t insult him later by saying it wrong.

“Yep.” Then, he leaned closer and lowered his voice. “But some of the ladies like to call meLick-em as well. I’ll answer to either.”

I couldn’t help but laugh at his lack of modesty. Though, that didn’t last long once Cillian’s arm wrapped around my shoulders and his chest rumbled.

Apparently, he didn’t need the bond to be possessive. And that was perfectly okay with me.

Just the mere thought of our lost connection had me rubbing my chest where I used to feel the pull toward him.

“Are you okay?” Cillian asked quietly.

I nodded. “Where do we go now?”

He and Lykem shared a look, and the latter shook his head. “I didn’t see anyone. Wherever they’d come from, they disappeared again before I got there.”

“I know where he went,” I said.

Both of them stared down at me, equal amounts of curiosity pouring from them, but it was Cillian who spoke first. “Let’s get back to the caves before we have that discussion. We don’t know how safe it is out here.”

Lykem stepped away and began to shift back to his dragon form, then Cillian turned to me. “You don’t have to ride on my back if you’d rather run as your wolf. I can fly low and stay close to you.”

While being high up in the air didn’t sound all that appealing to me or my wolf, I had little desire to separate from my mate now that I’d found him again.

“Go ahead and shift,” I said casually. “Is there anywhere I shouldn’t sit?”

Lykem’s dragon had small spikes up his neck, and I’d rather not be too close to one of those if Cillian had them as well.

“Anywhere you feel safe is perfect,” Cillian answered, then pulled me in for a quick kiss before he moved away to shift.

My eyes stayed fixed on his body, wanting to see every moment of his transformation. The air around him began to flicker with opaque energy, and unfiltered power radiated from his skin. He kept his stare on me until the last second, then closed his eyes.

Quicker than I could track, his body shifted and elongated, growing ten times its previous size and becoming a dragon even larger than Lykem’s.

Cillian’s back had to be close to fifteen feet from the ground, and as he stretched his wings, I could see those were nearly as wide as he was tall. His tail flicked out behind him with three spikes at the end that I assumed were rather deadly in certain situations.

His scales reminded me of rocks. Stone-like until the sun hit them, making them seem more golden. There were also several splashes of blue that stood out against the earthy color.
