I shifted to my dragon form and took to the skies, keeping low to not attract attention. I didn’t spot any of the others that should have been out on patrol, which worried me further.

There were no signs of battle, but that didn’t mean lives hadn’t been lost in the nearly twelve hours we’d been gone.

With speed and efficiency, I was at the caves and shifting back to two feet in record time. I ran into the cave entrance and found Winter first. “Where is Penn?” I demanded.

She shrunk back against the dirt wall and pointed to the right. “In the dining hall. I just left there, and he was eating still.”

I didn’t bother with thanks. Instead, I continued my sprint, rounding corners as quickly as my legs would take me until I entered the area where a grouping of tables was set up.

My finger pointed at Penn, and he looked up at me with wide eyes. I suspected I looked almost feral after everything that had been happening as of late, the worst being that the warnings people had given Dawsyn and I about our bond weren’t unwarranted.

“I need you now,” I said gruffly.

He left his bowl of food behind and was out of his seat before I finished the sentence. “What’s wrong?”

“I need you to reopen the portal to allow anyone in,” I said in hushed tones. I wanted to believe we could trust everyone here, but there was no way to be certain.

He grimaced. “It already is. I went to check on things once it was safe again, and what was undone couldn’t be redone without more time.”

“Why the fuck didn’t anyone tell me that?” I snapped, fisting my hands at my sides. “Never mind. I need to go.”

I’d never even needed to leave Dawsyn behind. If something happened to her again…

Fuck!

My mood without her by my side was quickly souring, and I needed to get the fuck out of the caves before I tore someone’s head off. Literally.

“Where is Fane?” I asked next.

“On patrol somewhere near the dark forest,” he answered. “Everyone is preparing for an attack.”

Well, at least one thing was going our way.

I turned abruptly and raced for the cave exit. I needed to shift and tell Fane what I knew as I rushed to get my mate back in my arms.

Otherwise, I was going to head right for the dark forest and burn the whole fucking place to bedrock. As soon as the snake living in the tunnel showed his damned face, I would remove it from his body.

ChapterTwenty-Five

DAWSYN

Iwas waiting in the truck and couldn’t make my knee stop bouncing. Having the link to Knox gone was worth every bit of pain, but his threat wouldn’t leave my mind. Neither would the concern that my bond with Cillian had yet to begin thrumming inside my chest again.

It also didn’t help that I had no idea what he was walking into once he entered Drago again.

Had Knox already begun to cause mayhem? Was there even anyone left to help us?

All questions I wasn’t going to get an answer to until my mate returned, and I badly needed a distraction. I started poking around Cillian’s truck. Opening the glove box and then center console, the only thing I found was his phone in the cupholder.

As my fingers drummed over my thighs, I remembered River. Gods, I was such a shitty best friend.

I grabbed Cillian’s phone and breathed out a sigh of relief when there was no passcode to get into it.

Thankfully, I had River’s phone number memorized. The line rang once, and the grumbling voice of my best friend echoed through the line. “Where is she, Cillian?”

“She’s right here,” I said. “She’s also really sorry she couldn’t call sooner, and she loves you.”

“Fuck, Dawsyn.” River’s harsh breath broke my heart. “I thought you were…”
