A transport system? “I know what I saw,” I said, shaking my head.

“No one’s doubting that,” Brute cut in as he stood up a little taller, which was weird. I think he’d just come to my rescue, so to speak. Backing me up.

Usually, I didn’t need anyone “backing me up” like that—actually, it tended to piss me off. Not sure why it didn’t this time.

Either way, Gabe, Vito, and Deo nodded.

But that didn’t change the fact that our only bit of proof had apparently just vanished.

Deo swallowed a mouthful of food and set down the carton. “So, now we’ve got no proof and no leads,” he said, summing up our shitty situation rather succinctly.

“And Domínguez is starting to do his own recon,” Gabe added, then filled the rest of them in on what they’d missed while we were gone.

I looked at Gabe, fighting the urge to go running up to my room to be sure the assholes hadn’t run off with any of my panties—because that seemed like exactly the kind of weird-ass scumbags we were dealing with.

But I recognized the look in Gabe’s eyes, the look that said he was about ready to call the game on account of rain.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve hit a brick wall, amico,” I reminded him. “Everything in me is telling me we’re on the right track.”

If Gabe decided to get off this train, I had a feeling Deo would jump off too, and that would leave me pretty much screwed. I didn’t have the kind of money at my disposal that they did. Just one of these private plane trips would have broken my bank account.

After a moment, Gabe nodded, conceding the point.

I let out the breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding at the same time Deo let out a frustrated sigh.

“If we’re sure about Domínguez, why don’t we put a bullet in his head and get back to business as usual?” he asked, clenching and unclenching his fists.

Brute shook his head before the rest of us could respond. “Can’t do that, my friend.”

Deo’s brow furrowed.

“If someone put me in the ground, my club would have one hell of a funeral to send my ass off to hell, but it wouldn’t do a damn thing to change club business. The only difference? My brothers would be nursing one hell of a grudge, looking for payback any way they could get it.”

Well said. But Deo knew that. He was just frustrated.

“I’m going to head back to Cait and Nic tonight,” Gabe said, and everything about his countenance changed like the names of his fiancée and son were a soothing balm.

I loved the man like a brother, but God, it was disgusting to watch. No way did I want my happiness tied up in someone else like that. Greta took care of Greta. Whether she needed happiness, comfort, adventure, or a wickedly good orgasm, those things were on me and nobody else.

“I’ll keep digging from that end,” Gabe went on, “and I’ll check in with Nacio to see if he’s managed to come across anything useful on Domínguez.”

That seemed to satisfy Deo and Vito, and when Gabe’s burner phone rang a moment later, it seemed this little meeting had come to an end.

Gabe headed off to his room, answering the phone halfway there, while Deo and Vito headed off to the kitchen. What a surprise.

I stood in the foyer, staring at the cream-colored sofa, trying not to see this little mission we were on going up in smoke.

“We’ll get him, darling,” Brute said from close beside me. “I won’t stop ’til we do.” He spoke with so much conviction, it was hard not to believe him.

“Why?” I asked, because that kind of conviction didn’t make sense.

For Brute, this was about his sister—a sister who was small enough in comparison to him that he could have hooked her under his arm and dragged her back to New York, kicking and screaming.

He shrugged. “Good deeds and all that shit.”

That made no more sense. I opened my mouth to say so when his gaze met mine and my mouth seemed to close of its own volition.

This wasn’t about “good deeds and all that shit”. It was about me; it was for me. I could see it right there in his pale blue eyes as clear as day.
