“Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.”

I needBianca by my side this evening because I missed being with her last night. I don’t want to admit that to anyone, but if there is one thing I am—with myself at least—it’s honest.

It took everything in me to allow her to attend that coffee date with her friend. He knew her, before. He tried to save her life. If she saw that as heroic… If she realized what she was missing and decided she wanted to go back to that way of life, I would have to step in and stop her from doing so.

And her hatred for me would likely rise all over again.

The report I had from the team on duty that day was pleasing. They said she defended me to her old friend. And she admitted to him that she loves me.

Thoughts of Bianca fill my head when I should be focusing on business. But I’ve come to enjoy her slightly besotted expression when she looks at me now. I listen for the increased tempo in her breathing when I enter the room, and l enjoy the slight pink that colors her cheeks even while she pretends to everyone around us that I have no effect on her at all.

I know the truth about what my presence does for her.

And what hers does for me. Everything about Bianca Carlotti-Agosti turns me on.

I imagine sinking into her willing body, or sliding my hard cock between her hot, eager lips and allowing her beautiful mouth to suck me dry. My dick twitches into instant semihardness.

I want her. More than I’ve ever wanted any woman. And yet, I know that wanting her makes me weak. I cannot afford weakness in a world in which the slightest hint of vulnerability could mean a lessening of my power and control.

It could mean chaos. Or death.

My need for Bianca makes me vulnerable, but I can’t seem to switch it off.

Despite that, having her beside me at the club tonight feels right. She has shown that she can be trusted, to an extent at least, and I like the idea of drawing her further into our family business, albeit in the smallest of ways to start with.

The meet with the buyer’s representatives should be straightforward. The Carbone family is already aware of the product and price. They have received similar shipments from us several times before. Our negotiations have already been completed. This will be merely a courtesy meet to conclude the contract, and I will take the opportunity to tell them that this will be the last shipment of its kind.

My senses are telling me to be cautious, but I don’t believe the possible danger stems from the Carbone deal.

I push the intercom button on my desk and ask my PA, Dana, to call Danelli into my office.

“Be extra alert tonight,” I say when he puts his head around the door. “Just in case. Extra teams on duty, and I need everyone carrying.”

Danelli straightens and comes all the way into the room, carefully closing the door behind him. “Really, Boss? Should we postpone the meet, then? Your instincts are usually spot-on. I can—”

“No,” I cut across him. “I want this done and the shipment collected by tomorrow night at the latest. I simply need you to be ready for anything. Not just tonight but all the time. Rossi has been very quiet of late.”

“Yes, Boss.”

He turns to leave, worry dipping his brows together. Good. I want him concerned.I’mconcerned, and I do not like that state of being at all.

As he reaches the door, he looks back at me. “And Bianca? Do you want her back at the estate? She’s on her way here already, but I can always tell them to turn around and take her home.”

For a few seconds, I debate back and forth in my head. I don’t know what has me so jittery, but my gut says I’m making the right decision bringing her into the city tonight. “My wife stays with me through this. But make sure there’s extra protection at the estate tonight, too.”

Danelli’s frown deepens. “Yes, sir.”

He heads off to, presumably, arrange additional security and ensure everyone is armed and ready for anything.

Perhaps after tonight, I will be able to put aside this niggling doubt that something isn’t as it seems. Until then, Bianca will remain by my side where I can better protect her, if it becomes necessary.
