“Say it.”

The command hints at something desperate. Something that feeds my desire. Rio is not as in control as he wants everyone to believe.

I smile at him and lean close. I love the sound of his breath sucking in that way. I love the delicious scent of him that rises up and assails my nostrils. Need pools between my legs.

Can he smell it? My desire? I hope so. I am wet and yearning for his touch. I want the sensation of his fingers right there against my clit. Stroking along and around my seam. Sliding up into my channel in a promise of more to come.

“Yes, I missed you, Rio. A lot. And I don’t want to sleep alone tonight.Husband.”

His hand comes up and circles my throat. He squeezes, lightly, as if reminding me—or perhaps himself—who is in charge. I know exactly who’s in charge in this moment. He could do anything to me, and I would let him.

“Rio, I want you so—”

“Boss, they’re here.”

Danelli’s voice and his looming presence break the spell, and Rio releases me and leans back with a tiny groan. I doubt anyone else can hear that sound over the music, but I’m close enough to catch the regret.

“Soon, Bianca. I promise you.”

“Good.”

Then the emotionless mask is back in place, and he turns his attention to a group of suited businessmen walking toward our cluster of couches. Rio rises and draws me to my feet before cementing me to his side with a firm grip.

I flinch a little as I rub up against the metal beneath his arm. Rio is carrying a gun.

I flick a glance around and realize there are more of his security here than usual. Far more. They are everywhere. What is going on? Is it dangerous to be here tonight? Should I leave? It’s not just me to think about now; it’s my baby…Ourbaby…

As my thoughts fly around and my heart rate increases, I realize Rio would not deliberately put me in danger. Even without his knowledge of our child, he cares more for me than he wanted or planned to. I’m not sure how I know that, but I do. He cares for me a great deal, in his own twisted way.

“Carbone.” Rio’s tone is tight. “Take a seat. We have business to discuss.”

The shorter man in the center of the cluster of security turns his gaze on me. I suppress an instant shiver at the coldness in his features. He looks a little like Carlos Rossi, but without the grandfatherly twinkle.

“Withherhere?”

“You mean my wife, Bianca Carlotti-Agosti? You will address Bianca with respect. Or lose your tongue.”

At my mewl of distress, Rio’s arm tightens, holding me firmly in place when I try to shift away.

After a moment, the other man nods respectfully in my direction. “My mistake, Mrs. Agosti. It is a pleasure to meet you.”

I can’t do anything but nod. If I speak, I may accidentally let fly with a moan, or start crying. Would Rio really cut out the man’s tongue? I slip my arm around Rio’s waist. If I don’t, I’m afraid my shaking legs may not hold me up.

We are all in the process of taking our seats once again on the various couches when screaming breaks out below, and the music screeches to a sudden halt.

I don’t even have time to glance down there to see what’s going on. There is the weird sound of apop, pop, pop, then a series of loud blasts, and then Rio throws himself on top of me, crashing us down to the floor as all hell breaks loose around us.

The carpetedfloor is sticky against my cheek. It smells disgusting, like stale liquor.

I will have to tell Rio that he needs a new cleaning crew when this is over. Stupid inane thoughts keep popping into my head, as if time has stopped and I actually have the ability to consider them in a bubble of calm amidst the chaos.
