The way the slug is demanding Danielle, for God knows what, and the way Kurrahstka violently refuses him has my stomach twisting into knots.

I lean forward until my mouth is right next to Danielle’s ear and breathe, “I think we need to run. Today.”

When I lean back, her eyes are peeled wide, and I can see white all around the dark brown orbs of her irises. Her lips are pressed tightly together, but I don’t miss the tight nod she gives me.

“It seems our negotiations are at a standstill,” the slug—Glurg—huffs.

Kurrahstka arches an eyebrow and slowly lifts his eyes to us.

Shit!

We both jump to attention, swaying for all we’re worth, lest we get shocked through the bars again. When nothing happens, I chance a look back down to see that he’s looking across the table at his clients once more.

“You don’t think he’s actually considering their offer, do you?” Danielle whispers against my ear.

Fuck if I know? I don’t even know what fire crystals are, or what they do. Or just how badly he wants them,

Kurrahstka slams the flat of his hands against the table, the sharp sound making us jump, and the cage we’re in starts to sway.

“It seems that concludes our business.” He pushes himself to his feet and waves to the doorway. “I trust you can see yourself out?”

“Now, let’s not be hasty!” another slug sputters. He shoots the one demanding Danielle in trade a narrowed look. “My apologies for Glurg; he is young and,” another glare at Glurg, “impulsive.”

Kurrahstka sits back down and folds his arms across his chest.

“Now, we are prepared to offer you 20,000 fire crystals in exchange for…”

Danielle and I both relax as the males below us get back to business. This time an agreement is made, one that does not include Danielle, and Kurrahstka escorts them out of the strip club. My skin crawls the way Glurg keeps watching Danielle until he disappears into the hallway.

Finally, we’re alone.

“I have a bad feeling that we haven’t seen the last of him,” Danielle mutters as one of the orcs returns to set us free.

Silently, we follow him back to our room, where we quicky undress. I ball up the slutty dress and throw it into the corner before stepping into a clean jumpsuit. Then I cross the room to the door.

“What are you doing?” Danielle hisses as I use my fingernail to lift away the control panel at the top.

“I told you; we need to run. Now.”

I hear her sigh as I pull the metal plate back, exposing the wires.

“And where are we going to go?”

The panel sparks when I pop one of the wires loose. “I think I saw something that looks like a bank of escape pods on the way to the strip club.”

“Okay, so what if you did?” Danielle comes to stand beside me. “What happens next? Will it just shoot us into space where we’ll float until we run out of air? What if it sends us to a planet that isn’t hospitable?” Her hand comes down on top of mine, stopping me. “Shae, we need to think about this.”

“Do you want Kurrahstka to just give you to one of thosethings?” I snap. “And if not him, then someone else? Because someday, it will happen.”

I watch her nose wrinkle. “We don’t know that for sure either. So far—”

“So far we’ve beenlucky!” I tell her. “But what happens when our luck runs out? We’ll be like the girl in the room next to us, begging for help, but knowing it’ll never come.”

She inhales sharply through her nose and then steps back. “Okay. You’re right.”

Letting out a sigh of relief that I’ve finally convinced her, I tap two wires together, and the door slides open. Anywhere has to be better than here. It could be a lot worse too, but… fuck, maybe Danielle’s manifesting shit is getting to me, because I’m willing to chance it in the hopes that something better is waiting for us.
